Nicholas Hoult was almost cast in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and though he had to drop out, he would be a great addition to the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two cast. Hoult is on an unbelievable hot streak in his career, and he’s settled comfortably into playing hilariously weird roles, such as Robert Harley in The Favourite, Tyler in The Menu, and now Dracula’s familiar in Renfield. The actor works best in these low-to-mid-budget movies, and outside of playing Beast in the X-Men franchise, he hasn’t actually had many roles in huge blockbuster movies, but he has come extremely close several times.

One major franchise that has the potential to include the Renfield star is Mission: Impossible. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the first of the two-part finale of the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, and it has an epic cast to go along with Tom Cruise’s most death-defying stunts yet. With the last two films being filmed back-to-back and telling two halves of the same story, the level of overlap between the two casts isn’t surprising. Both Mission: Impossible movies will feature more than a handful of the same characters. But with the eighth movie being a bit further off than Mission: Impossible 7, there could be some major differences with the cast that aren’t known. One could be the addition of Nicholas Hoult.
Nicholas Hoult Was Almost Cast In Mission: Impossible 7
Hoult isn’t a confirmed cast member in either movie, but was supposed to be in both. Cruise officially cast him as the overarching villain of the final two Mission: Impossible movies. However, Hoult ultimately had to turn down the role because of his commitment to Hulu’s The Great TV series. The role wound up going to Esai Morales instead. The actor spoke about his bad luck, explaining, “I got the call from Tom Cruise: ‘Hey, how about Mission Impossible?’ Ok. Got it. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of The Great.”
This wasn’t the first Cruise and Hoult could have worked together. Apparently, Hoult was even flown to Cruise’s house to meet with him when casting was underway for Top Gun: Maverick. Hoult of course didn’t get a part in the Top Gun sequel, but it seems his interactions with Tom Cruise went well enough for the actor to offer him the role of the main antagonist for not one, but two Mission: Impossible movies.

Nicholas Hoult Would Be A Great Addition To Mission: Impossible 8
While scheduling conflicts held Hoult back from starring in what could be one of 2023’s biggest box office hits, he could still have a small role in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two. Based on his acting range, Hoult could easily play anything from an eccentric villain to an office-based IMF agent. Making it work could still be a struggle, though, as the eighth Mission: Impossible movie is currently in production and Hoult is busy with the Robert Eggers-directed Nosferatu remake. But a scene of Hoult acting alongside Cruise in the movie is exactly what the two have been trying to bring to the big screen for years now.
