Big Rapids senior reflects on final sports season

BIG RAPIDS – It was a unique senior track and field season for Big Rapids’ David Miller.
Following a standout football career, Miller entered his senior track season with high goals in his two events: the shot put and discus. He threw a season record of 38.4 ½ in the shot put and had a personal record of 126-6 in the discus.
He was hoping to be among the top throwers in the CSAA this season. In the league meet, he was 13th in the shot put and ninth in the discus.
Discus was his best event, Miller said. Midway in season, he had hopes for passing 130 feet and came just a few feet short. Technique is critical in both events, he said.
“It’s not so much about skill and power but more about technique,” he said.
In his event, “we have a lot of young fresh throwers who once they get their technique mastered there will be some great throwers on the team,” Miller said.
Miller decided to come out for track as a sophomore and indicated he’s shown improvement ever since.
“Our football coach (Mike Selzer) was the coach (for track) and wanted me to come do it,” Miller said.
He’s glad he did it. After graduation, Miller said he would be entering the Air Force.
