ENCINITAS, CA — Before the Big Game kicks off Sunday, a San Diego Super Bowl Sunday tradition will kick off in North County.
The Kook Run, both a fun run and a professional race, will start at at 7 a.m. Sunday in Encinitas. Thousands of people are expected to kick off the morning with a 5K/10K fun run and a costumed race along the Pacific Coast. “Just like a run on Thanksgiving morning, this event has become a Super Bowl tradition for runners and walkers both locally, and all across the West Coast,” Kook Run co-owner and organizer Jim O’Hara told Patch. “The energy on the coast is unmistakably positive with pros, average joes, and costumed runners coming together to kick off an unofficial holiday by stretching their legs out with some fitness and fun!”
The event, which is presented by BUBS Naturals, begins with a 10K race that will again be made up of an international field of runners, as well as the top runners in Southern California. Runners will race for a cash purse of $3,000. The event also features a costume contest, which awards the top three in each of the following categories: “Football Fan,” “Group Costume” and “Individual Kook.” Costume contest participants need to register and check in at the costume contest registration table between 6:30-7:15 a.m. The costume award ceremony will take place after the 5K race. Winners must be present to win.
“The Kook Run is for everyone,” O’Hara said. “We love that the community is so well represented at this event. At an event where the Fastest 10K on the West Coast is run, we’ve simultaneously had a group of sisters who were age 80 and over walk the 5K in costume, and cross the finish line and go directly to the Finishline Festival to collect first place in the event’s costume contest. “So whether you are the fastest or funnest, whether you come for a run or walk, or for the festival afterwards, no matter who you are, you will feel welcomed at the Kook Run presented by Bubs Naturals.”
The course starts under the Encinitas sign on the historic Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas. The scenic loop passes by the famous Cardiff Kook statue, rises above popular surf breaks and heads down to Cardiff State Beach. “The first Kook Run took place in 2012 as an epiphany of a Super Bowl Sunday run the year prior that there’s no better way to start your Super Bowl Sunday than a run or walk along the Coast Highway in Encinitas and Cardiff by the Sea’s famous Kook statue,” O’Hara said.
There will be a post-run festival that will feature a beer garden and live music. Children will also get their own day to run Saturday at the 3rd annual Junior Kook Run. The event starts at 10 a.m. and features a course modified for kids, from 400 yards to 1 mile, at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA at 200 Saxony Road in Encinitas. Registration costs $50 for the 5K (3.1 miles), $75 for the 10K (6.2 miles) and $15 for the Junior Kook Run. Participants receive a T-shirt and finisher’s medal. Race day and costume contest registration will open at 6 a.m. Sunday. Welcome and introductions will take place at 7 a.m. The Elite/10K race starts at 7:20 a.m., while the 5K and Costume Division race starts at 7:55 a.m. The awards ceremony will take place at 9:15 a.m. Advance packet and T-shirt pick-up will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ecke YMCA.
Portions of the Kook Run proceeds will benefit Cardiff 101 Mainstreet and the Ecke YMCA, according to event organizers. The event’s beer garden sales will benefit the Right Hand Angels. For more information, visit thekookrun.com.
