Allegiant Expects A Historic Summer Travel Boom This Year

American ultra-low-cost carrier Allegiant Air announced today it expects a historic summer travel boom as the country moves beyond the COVID-19 pandemic and crisis that profoundly impacted the airline industry. Therefore, the airline is preparing to have the right resources for this coming season.
Historic summer travel boom
This summer season is expected to be extremely busy for the airline industry in the United States. Earlier this month, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced it is anticipating a record number of people to be screened at security checkpoints at airports nationwide, surpassing 2019 pre-pandemic volumes.

TSA acting Federal Security Director (FSD) for Colorado, Anne Cross, said that air travel is back, and the number of people traveling continues to increase. “TSA has been planning for the summer travel season for weeks, putting staffing and other operational plans in place to ensure a smooth and efficient security experience for all travelers.”
Airlines are also preparing for this travel boom. Blake Kline, Allegiant’s director of the operations control center, said,
“As people take vacations in droves, our teams at Allegiant have been preparing almost a year in advance since the tail end of last year’s summer season, ensuring we have the right resources in place for this operationally intense time of the year.”
Ensuring the right resources
To ensure the airline has the right resources, Allegiant said it has a team of people sitting at its headquarters in Summerlin, Nevada, monitoring every movement. This Operations Control Center (OCC) ensures that flight crews are prepared for a smooth and successful journey, the airline said in a statement. From the OCC, teams from dispatch, operations managers, crew services, maintenance control, planning, customer operations, and charter operations are grouped together, maintaining and enhancing the airline’s operational reliability.

Blake Kline added that communication with the frontline is critical to the smart and efficient deployment of the airline’s resources, especially during peak flying seasons. Nonetheless, Allegiant Air warned about uncontrollable factors, such as bad weather or air flow restrictions. In recent days, thunderstorms and inclement weather across the East Coast have caused significant delays for thousands of travelers, particularly flying from Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York, and Atlanta.
Allegiant trimmed its summer schedule earlier this year. By doing so, the company has the flexibility to be more responsive to unexpected issues that could arise, such as thunderstorms. Allegiant also increased its staffing levels and recommended that all passengers arrive at the airport at least two hours before their scheduled flight departure.
Allegiant’s top five destinations for the summer
As Allegiant Air moves into the peak summer season, the ultra-low-cost carrier revealed its top five summer 2023 destinations across the United States. These destinations are Las Vegas Harry Reid International (LAS), Orlando-Sanford International (SFB), St. Pete-Clearwater-Tampa International (PIE), Punta Gorda International (PGD), and Destin-Fort Walton Beach (VPS).
According to data from Cirium, Allegiant Air is expected to operate 2,686 weekly flights in July 2023, recovering its pre-pandemic traffic levels. The airline’s routes with the most capacity are:
