King Charles’ coronation will be a blend of British tradition and modern updates, with a shorter run time and procession route than his mother’s seven decades ago, Buckingham Palace announced.
Charles and Queen Camilla will travel 1.3 miles from Buckingham Palace to the Westminster Abbey church for the May 6 ceremony, riding in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach introduced in 2012 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s monarchy. The horse-guided coach is equipped with air conditioning and electric windows.

Elizabeth, who died in September at age 96, traveled 1.6 miles in the Gold State Coach during her three-hour coronation in 1953. Charles and Camilla will ride in the Gold State Coach — which has been used in every coronation since 1831 — for their return procession.
Charles and Camilla’s return procession will follow the same route they traveled to get to the church. Elizabeth’s return procession was 4.5 miles long.

Next month’s event will likely be shorter in run time than Elizabeth’s as well but will feature numerous Royal Family staples. St. Edward’s Crown — originally used in the 1661 coronation of King Charles II — will be placed atop the current Charles’ head during the ceremony, while Camilla will wear a modified version of the century-old Queen Mary’s Crown.
“Upon returning to Buckingham Palace following the Coronation Service, Their Majesties will receive a Royal Salute from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth Armed Forces who have been on parade that day,” the Royal Family said.

“The Royal Salute will be followed by three cheers from the assembled service personnel, as a tribute from the Armed Forces on parade to The King and The Queen Consort on the day of Their Majesties’ Coronation.”
Charles, 74, is the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth, whose 70-year monarchy is the longest ever in the U.K.
Charles’ younger son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, have not confirmed whether they will attend the coronation. Harry, who stepped down from his senior royal duties in 2020, has repeatedly spoken about his strained relationship with his father and older brother, Prince William, including in an explosive memoir, “Spare,” released in January.
Harry and Meghan are raising their two children in Southern California.
