Arsenal may have missed out on their No 1 midfielder target in January – but a trusted Sky Sports News reporter claims plans are already in place for two summer signings that will take the Gunners to the next level.
Mikel Arteta’s side sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League table. As such, hopes are alive that they have a genuine chance of ending their 19-year title drought.
In order to maximise their prospects, Arteta was keen to use the January window to his full advantage. And while they missed out on Mykhaylo Mudryk – Chelsea pipping them to the punch – they did soon secure a deal for Leandro Trossard.
Arsenal also managed to land Polish defender Jakub Kiwior from Spezia. But Arteta’s main quest once that was done was to strengthen his midfield. As such, the Gunners honed in on the capture of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.
However, despite Caicedo’s practially begging to make the move, Brighton stood firm and resisted all Arsenal threw at them.
Indeed, after seeing a second bid worth in excess of £70m rejected, Arsenal made the choice to walk away.
As a solid alternative, however, Arsenal did manage to wrap up the signing of Jorginho from Chelsea. The Italy midfielder signs on an 18-month deal, with a one-year option, and for a fee of £12m. His Premier League know-how will certainly come in useful during the title run-in.
However, despite missing out on Caicedo, the Gunners are expected to come back in for him this summer.
And, according to Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth, technical director Edu has massive plans in place this summer.
With Champions League money at their disposal again, Arsenal will benefit from an increased budget.
Arsenal want Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice this summer
And as well as signing Caicedo in a potential deal worth £80m, Arsenal are also looking at another midfielder too in Declan Rice.
The England star has made clear his wish to leave West Ham and play at a higher level. And with his deal at the London Stadium expiring in 2024, though West Ham do hold a one-year option, a big-money exit does appear highly likely.
And it seems Arsenal do have the upper hand with a trusted source naming Arsenal as leading candidates to sign him.
Now Sheth has provided an update on Arsenal’s summer plans for both Rice and Caicedo in an explosive double coup.
Speaking to Sky Sports News (31/01/23, 18.01), he said: “I’m told Jorginho is not as an alternative to Moises Caicedo. I understand Arsenal were, at any time, ready to do a deal for Caicedo on deadline day IF in the unlikely circumstance that Brighton changed their stance.
“Brighton’s stance though has been firm: Moises Caicedo is NOT for sale in January. That has now been confirmed to me: Caicedo will not join Arsenal in January. I’m told that whatever they were to bid, Brighton were simply not going to accept.
“This though will then fast forwarded into the summer if he does not sign a new contract. We’re going to have another saga again: Caicedo to Arsenal; Rice to Arsenal. Arsenal are in for both of those, we believe, in the summer.”
