North Korea announced on Thursday that it successfully conducted the first flight test of a new cruise missile, which it claimed was a “strategic” weapon capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the Pulhwasal-3-31 missile flew for over an hour and hit targets 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) away, demonstrating its “high efficiency and accuracy.”
The test came a day after South Korea detected the North launching several cruise missiles into the sea off its west coast, as Associated Press reports. The South’s military did not give details on the number or type of the missiles but said it was closely monitoring the situation.
