Mt. Pleasant Town Council solidifies position against cruise terminal at Patriots Point

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) – Mount Pleasant officials say they couldn’t have cruise traffic at Patriots Point even if they wanted.
Town council on Tuesday adopted a resolution solidifying their commitment to a state law that does not allow the use of “piers, ships, docks, quays or similar structures” for cargo and passenger vessels.
State law established the Patriots Point Development Authority. It allowed it to build, buy and operate docks and ships but only “exclusively for fulfilling the educational, recreational and tourist missions.”
The resolution that passed unanimously, with one member abstaining, includes language making it clear that Patriots Point could not be used as an “embarkation port, disembarkation port, port of call, or to otherwise load and unload passengers of cruise ships.”
