Mission: Impossible 7’s Massive Train Wreck Stunt Teased By Director

Mission: Impossible 7 director Christopher McQuarrie teases the movie’s massive train wreck sequence. The Mission: Impossible series has gone to a lot of exotic locales and unleashed a lot of mayhem over the course of six films, but the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One may be the franchise’s biggest and most mayhem-unleashing movie yet. In addition to a widely teased Tom Cruise motorcycle jump off a cliff, the film features a huge central action sequence involving a train, which has itself been teased via various BTS images and videos.

Just to build the hype a little more ahead of the Mission Impossible 7 release date, director McQuarrie has teased the movie’s big train wreck one more time, while revealing some of the classic-movie inspirations behind the sequence. While revealing that the sequence involves the destruction of a real 70-ton train, McQuarrie told EW how he and star/producer Cruise cooked up the stunt. Check out what McQuarrie said in the space below:
“At the start of this movie, I said to Tom, ‘What do you want to do?’ He said, ‘I want to drive a motorcycle off of a cliff. What do you want to do?’ And I said, ‘I want to wreck a train.’ We’re enormous fans of Buster Keaton, John Frankenheimer, David Lean, all of these filmmakers who at one time or another had a fabulous train wreck. I thought, I’ve earned that, I want to wreck one too.”
Everything That’s Been Revealed About Mission: Impossible 7’s Train Action
Throughout the long and arduous process of Mission: Impossible 7’s making, it’s been made clear that the movie’s train action forms the centerpiece of the story. Most recently, a BTS image was released showing Cruise’s Ethan Hunt grappling with the movie’s villain, played by Esai Morales, on top of the film’s central locomotive. Previously, other images were released showing Cruise dangling off the very same train, and videos were leaked showing Cruise’s co-star Hayley Atwell getting into the middle of the train action as well.
That the very same train featured in all these big stunt sequences was set to be wrecked was also revealed awhile back, as controversy erupted over the film’s original plan to partially destroy a Polish bridge as part of the wreck sequence. Ultimately though, McQuarrie and company went to the UK to film the train wreck scene of the director’s dreams. As he told EW, “I think the energy that went into developing it, designing that, building it, and then making a sequence that justified its existence was probably the biggest challenge of my entire life.”
