Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes an Everton summer signing is already showing the quality that will make him a target for the ‘big six’ clubs.
Midfielder Amadou Onana has made an impressive start to life at Goodison Park, having arrived in a £33million deal from French club Lille back in August.
The 21-year-old has made seven Premier League appearances for a Toffees side sitting 14th in the Premier League table.
He impressed in the first half of the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on Saturday. However, a bad miss in the opening period ended up costing his side as Spurs eventually cruised home.
But speaking after the defeat in north London, Redknapp admitted Onana is the Everton signing he is most excited about from the summer.
And although the young midfielder is still adapting, he is showing signs of becoming a ‘really top midfielder’.
Indeed, Redknapp feels it’s only a matter of time before bigger clubs come calling.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Everton‘s summer business, Redknapp said: “The one I think I’m probably most excited by is Onana. “I think he’s still adjusting but he shows glimpses of being a really top midfield player.
“This is no disrespect to Everton. But he’s one that I’m sure the top six clubs, they’ll already have him on their radar, he’s got that ability. He’s such a leader,” he added.
Prem quartet were also in Onana race
The Atheltic reported recently that Liverpool, Arsenal Newcastle and West Ham all wanted Onana before he moved to Goodison.
The Reds are looking to revamp an aging midfield, with Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Thiago all the wrong side of 30, while Fabinho turns 29 later this month.
As for the Gunners, they want stronger competition for Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka in their midfield.
However, with Onana only recently moving to England it’s highly unlikely he will move elsewhere anytime soon.
It’s mosty likely that any suitors will wait for a full season to see how the player copes first.
However, if the small sample size is anything to go by then the Toffees could have a real asset on their hands.
