REMUS – Augusta “Gussie” Bowman’s sophomore season was just what the Chippewa Hills girls track and field Warriors needed to fuel them to their 20th straight conference title.
Bowman was an excellent runner for the Warriors and especially enjoyed the 800-meter run.
“I’ve gotten faster in the 800 and I had a strong mile,” she said.
But Bowman was especially a key for the Warriors as the lead leg in the 4×800-meter relay. The team was second at the CSAA meet, sixth at the regional and fourth at the MITCA state meet.
Bowman’s best time in the 800 in her two years career has been a 2:31.
“I like to kick it in a lot during the second lap,” Bowman said. “I’ve improved about two seconds from last year.”
At times she was a relay anchor but Bowman’s not sure if it put more pressure on her than any other leg.
“I like that the action was louder,” Bowman said., adding handoffs went smoothly all season. “We’re just going (into a meet) and trying the best we can.”
Bowman is also a standout cross country runner for Chippewa Hills and will now get ready for that season. She last season had a PR of 22:15.9 for the Warriors at the Portage Invitational and was 30th in the regionals. She ran at the state finals in Division 3 with her team and took 166th.
Bowman indicated cross country is her best sport. She was set to do a lot of running for this summer.
“I want to break 22 minutes,” she said. “It takes a lot of good determination and a lot of miles.”
Bowman and her teammates took a lot of pride in stretching the conference championship streak to 20 years.
“We support each other a lot and encourage each other on,” Bowman said. “It’s important to keep (the championship streak going). We know the history of it.”
