It was not an impromptu decision: the rhythm of heavy and irreconcilable work with the rhythms of the partner to whom she has been linked for 28 years and who works from March to September seven days a week played a decisive role. Instead, she had two jobs, one of 36 hours a week, from Monday to Friday morning with two afternoon returns to the Chamber of Commerce, the other as a teacher in a gym.
“They proposed to my partner to manage a restaurant. He was looking for a trusted person and I jumped at the opportunity. Now we are paid by the same company, I have a seasonal contract of six months a year which guarantees me security. Marco. and I have always been passionate travelers and before making the decision that changed our lives we did the math well in our pockets “, Alessandra tells Courier of Romagna.
South Africa, Peru, Cambodia and Mozambique
they are among the last destinations visited by the couple who in order to reach their goal of “ideal life”. “Our trips are the result of a year-long savings, on every side. In the summer I spend only on the water in the shower and the fuel of the scooter with which I go to work, where I spend most of the day”, adds Alessandra.
And so while some would judge it a risky choice and others would like to do the same but lack the courage, the couple has found their balance that they hope to carry on forever: “Even when Marco and I have white hair. taught not to look too far, but dream of the wonderful destinations suitable for the elderly that Europe and Italy offer “, says the 48-year-old.
In their days there is no lack of attention for the weakest, the couple has in fact married a Caritas project to bring food to the elderly and the homeless. “An intense period in which I established relationships and collected a great load of emotions. Then after the summer season, in 2021, we flew to Guadeloupe”, continues Alessandra. And after so many trips it is also nice to go home, without melancholy. “Never a regret. We enjoy the family, hoping that one day the grandchildren will join our adventures. When you travel so long you fill yourself with beauty that at a certain point you are the one who says: it’s time to go back”, declares the woman.
Once upon a time there was a steady job and a career at all costs. An ambition that for years has influenced the choices of entire generations. But something has now changed. Alessandra and Marco are not alone, a transformation is taking place that shakes the foundations of the traditional work system strongly hierarchized and based on performance and productivity and like them, more and more people are leaving work to travel. The phenomenon, born beyond the Atlantic, took the name of “Big quit” or “Great resignation” and now it seems to have arrived in Italy as well. Employment contracts terminated due to voluntary resignations, as confirmed by the latest Annual Report on mandatory communications, went from approximately 1,800,000 in 2019 to over 2,000,000 in 2021.
