New Zealand are hopeful that all-rounder Daryl Mitchell will recover from a broken finger in time for their opening T20 World Cup match against defending champions Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 22.
The 31-year-old fractured the little finger on his right while batting in the nets ahead of the Kiwis’ tri-series at home against Pakistan and Bangladesh and was ruled out of the ongoing series.
The head coach of the New Zealand cricket team, Gary Stead, has confirmed that Daryl Mitchell will travel to Australia with his teammates for the World Cup. Stead felt that Mitchell might not be available for the first game. They want him available for the second game against Afghanistan on October 26.

“The good news is we have made a decision about Daryl Mitchell and he will tour with us to the World Cup. When we thought about the value Daryl brings to the team and the likely time frame, we are still hopeful he will be right for the first game but probably more realistically the second game,” Stead said on Monday.

“There will still be four pool games to go and then hopefully semi-final and final after that. Daryl has showed the value to this team and we feel it was the right decision to make.”
The Kane Williamson-led team shows faith in his ability, and he is a crucial player in the New Zealand team. The player is known for playing big shots, and the team expects him to do that once he recovers from the injury.
Daryl Mitchell represented New Zealand in 35 T20I matches, scoring 657 runs at an average of 25.27 with a healthy strike rate of 141.59.
The pace-bowling all-rounder played a key role for the Black Caps in last year’s ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE, scoring 208 runs in 7 innings at an average of 34.67 and a strike rate of 140.54. He scored an unbeaten 72 off 47 balls against England in the semi-final in Abu Dhabi and led New Zealand to the final against Australia.
