Caitlin Clark’s bid for basketball history is Peacock-exclusive game

There may be no bigger winner this sports season than Peacock.
The NBCUniversal-owned streaming service, which already has managed to exclusively broadcast an NFL playoff game and carry the Premier League’s biggest clubs, is now set to show Caitlin Clark’s likely historic moment on Thursday night.
The Iowa women’s basketball megastar is in line to break the women’s college basketball scoring record when the Hawkeyes host Michigan, with the game slated to air on Peacock exclusively.
Clark is just eight points shy of toppling Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record set in 2017, but those hoping to see the record-setting moment will have to sign up for a Peacock subscription.

Exclusive streaming of major sporting events has been a major point of controversy for sports fans who have had to subscribe to a number of platforms in order to see some of their favorite teams.
NFL fans were up in arms this year when the AFC wild-card round matchup between the eventual-Super Bowl champion Chiefs faced off with the Dolphins, which aired only on Peacock nationally.
Local market NBC affiliates in Miami and Kansas City were able to carry the game, but Thursday’s Iowa basketball game will not have that option for Hawkeyes fans or women’s hoops fans.
NBC Sports president Jon Miller told Sportico last month that “stars sell” when discussing what Clark and other huge names meant to the streaming service.

Clark has become one of the biggest names not just in women’s basketball, but in the sport as a whole.
The Hawkeyes star has shied away from focusing on the points record and putting her energy toward being a leader.
“I understand the magnitude of this,” Clark said, according to ESPN. “But I think it’s just kind of come along with how my four years have gone.
“I’m just really thankful and grateful.”
