Analysis: What Flight Tickets Used To Cost In The ‘Golden Age’ Of Commercial Aviation

Summary Air travel has become more accessible, comfortable, and affordable than ever despite increasing costs and stricter policies.
Airfares have significantly decreased since the 1940s, especially after airline deregulation in 1978.
The demand for air travel continues to increase, making it more accessible and affordable with the rise of low-cost carriers and increased competition.
Commercial airline passengers have seen a significant uptick in airfares since the start of the aviation recovery period. Besides steep airfares, air travelers also complain about the increasing cost of ancillaries, declining customer service, and stricter airline policies.
In spite of the ever-increasing cost of air travel, air travel is more accessible, comfortable, and affordable than ever. This article delves deeper into the historical prices of flight tickets and how those compare to today’s airfares.
Changes since the Golden Age of air travel
Since the 1940s, a lot has changed regarding the type of aircraft (size, range, speed, and efficiency), taxes and fees, and accessibility. Moreover, the jet age has significantly shifted how air travel is conducted. Newer, more efficient aircraft have paved the way for quicker, more accessible, and affordable air travel.
Up until the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, airfares were controlled by the government. Deregulation has not only allowed more airlines to emerge but also allowed greater competition in terms of ticket prices, comfort, and travel benefits.
Flight ticket comparison
The table below shows a comparison of airfares between Los Angeles (LAX) and Boston (BOS) based on a study by Compass Lexecon, commissioned by Airlines for America.
Year Number of stops Flight duration Cost 1941 12 15 hours 15 minutes $4,439.24 2015 0 (nonstop) 6 hours 0 minutes $408.89 2024 0 (nonstop) 5 hours 10 minutes $119.67
As seen from the above table, the cost of flight measured from a single domestic route has significantly lowered since the 1940s. Notably, airfares of thousands of dollars were reduced considerably to just hundreds of dollars after airline deregulation. For example, in 1979, a ticket on a similar coast-to-coast route cost just under $700.

The Compass Lexecon study shows that the price per mile on a domestic flight has decreased by over 40% between 1990 and 2016. As it happens, the cost of fuel has increased by over $110% and airline fees have risen from $3.5 to $22.70. Factoring in the two parameters, the current price per mile is still over 35% cheaper than in the 1990s.
A significant increase in passenger numbers
Larger, more efficient, and economically viable aircraft have allowed more passengers to use air travel. Air travel has evolved from being a privilege for a select few to a service for billions each year. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows that airlines serviced 1.6 billion passengers in 2000. That number went up to 2.1 billion in 2005, 3.5 billion in 2015, and over 4.5 billion in 2019.
Year Number of passengers carried 2000 1.6 billion 2005 2.1 billion 2015 3.5 billion 2019 4.5 billion 2023 4.4 billion (recovery from the pandemic) 2040 10 billion (forecasted)

Demand for air travel will only go upwards in the coming years. Despite the apparent increase in cost, air travel is becoming more accessible and affordable thanks to the emergence of low-cost carriers and the ever-increasing competition among airlines.
