The Rock’s Actor Reunion Makes His Upcoming A24 Movie So Much More Exciting

Summary The Rock’s collaboration with Benny Safdie in ‘The Smashing Machine’ is a thrilling departure from his usual blockbuster roles.
Emily Blunt’s potential role in the dramatic film adds credibility, making it a standout project for both actors.
‘The Smashing Machine’ presents an exciting opportunity for Johnson to showcase his dramatic skills and expand his career beyond traditional action roles.
A24’s upcoming The Smashing Machine movie just got much more exciting, given the rumors of an actor reunion between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and a former co-star. Johnson’s most exhilarating project in years finds the typically high-octane blockbuster actor collaborating with Uncut Gems’ director Benny Safdie for the sports biopic The Smashing Machine, depicting the life and rise of MMA fighter Mark Kerr. In the role of Kerr, Johnson having to dig into his dramatic acting side is to be expected, considering the legendary fighter’s career forged at some seriously high costs.
Kerr’s rise during the brutal no-holds-barred fighting stage of early MMA and his associated drug abuse, previously documented in John Hyam’s 2002 documentary similarly titled The Smashing Machine, is a heavy account, indicating that A24’s dramatization of Kerr’s life will be both heart-rending and intense. The sports biopic will be challenging for Johnson since he’s best known for highly entertaining, action-oriented, and comedic parts. However, if he can nail the role, especially with Safdie and a possible Jungle Cruise co-star acquainted with the MMA movie, The Smashing Machine could become his best project to date.

The Rock & Emily Blunt Reuniting Is Great News For A24’s The Smashing Machine
Rampant rumors suggest the powers that be are eyeing Johnson’s Jungle Cruise cast co-star Emily Blunt for a role in The Smashing Machine. Blunt has been an integral part of The Smashing Machine’s process already, as she supposedly encouraged Safdie and Johnson to take the project out of the conception phase and into a movie she felt must happen. If Safdie and Johnson retain Blunt, her part in The Smashing Machine wouldn’t just pay off her vigorous support of the project but reunite the Jungle Cruise duo in a clever casting that would make the biopic all the more desirable.
With the exceptional chemistry that they established together in Jungle Cruise and their combined star power, the possibility of Blunt and Johnson reuniting is great news for The Smashing Machine .
The Smashing Machine always sounded good, having a compelling, real-life-based premise with the beloved The Rock in the lead, but recruiting Blunt would be an impressive play for added acting cred. Johnson has too few roles to prove his dramatic skills, yet Blunt, with Oppenheimer, The Girl on the Train, Sicario, and many more to her name, has proven a tact for drama beyond a doubt. Emily Blunt would also be reuniting with Benny Safdie, whom she previously worked alongside in the cast of Oppenheimer .

The Rock & Emily Blunt’s The Smashing Machine Is Better Than Making Jungle Cruise 2
The Smashing Machine is a much more compelling endeavor than pursuing a Jungle Cruise sequel and could become an unexpected career win for both Johnson and Blunt. For Johnson, Jungle Cruise 2 would limit him to the movie star formula he’s used to, whereas The Smashing Machine breaks The Rock out of his acting mold and is far more intriguing in the scope of his career. Assuming he does it well, his lead in The Smashing Machine would open the door for the actor to seek and take on other dramatic roles, providing his fans with exciting, uncharacteristically diversified performances.
In truth, Jungle Cruise doesn’t particularly need a sequel – Jungle Cruise’s fantasy adventure concluded comprehensively and only necessitates a sequel if audiences desire to see Frank (Johnson) and Lily (Blunt) embark on a new escapade. Instead, Johnson is better off expanding his career, and Blunt is better off in a captivating role that The Smashing Machine could provide. She’s long proven her dramatic prowess, but a part in The Smashing Machine would make greater use of Blunt’s talent than a Jungle Cruise sequel ever could and may even give rise to rave reception and high honors for her performance.

Will Jungle Cruise 2 With The Rock & Emily Blunt Still Happen?
Close
Despite no need for a Jungle Cruise sequel, it shouldn’t come as a shock that Jungle Cruise 2 is in development. Jungle Cruise’s $220 million box office earnings laid the groundwork for future installments, with Johnson and Blunt conceivably leading the theme park attraction-based premise into a lucrative franchise. Both are already confirmed to be on board for Jungle Cruise, reprising their roles as Frank and Lily, respectively.
Jungle Cruise has yet to confirm a release date but will likely debut well before The Smashing Machine, as the latter is still in pre-production. Granted that Blunt gets cast in the sports biopic, it will be interesting to see how her and Johnson’s lead performances stack up in two completely different films. Though dissimilar, one is likely to be a cut above the other, and prospectively, The Smashing Machine has the upper hand in featuring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in peak performances like no one has seen before.
