A pair of Sky Sports pundits joked about the biggest issue that will prevent Harry Kane from winning his fourth golden boot, and it’s something the Tottenham striker can do nothing about.
Kane has three EPL golden boots to his name, winning the award outright or sharing it in the 2015–16, 2016–17 and 2020–21 campaigns.
He’s started the current season in fine form, with his penalty against Everton on Saturday evening bringing his goals tally to nine.
With Mohamed Salah way back on just two, Kane would ordinarily be the odds-on favourite at this stage of the season.
However, Erling Haaland is near-unstoppable at Man City and leads the way with 15. If Kane is to overhaul the lethal Norwegian, something drastic has to change.
When speaking in the aftermath of Spurs’ 2-0 win on Saturday, Sky Sports pundits Andros Townsend and Jamie Redknapp assessed the golden boot race.
They lauded Kane’s early season-impact, though joked about one reason why Haaland may even pull away from Kane in the second half of the season.
“This season [Kane has] started on fire,” said Townsend. “He’s got nine goals in 10 games – the best return of his career at this stage in a season.
“But he’s so far away from Haaland who’s doing spectacular stuff at the moment.”
Jamie Redknapp talked up both Ivan Toney and Aleksandar Mitrovic who are third (eight goals) and fourth (seven goals) in the top scorers chart respectively.
He insisted Tottenham talisman Kane will be up for the fight of catching Haaland, though joked one thing in particular could halt his charge.
“He’ll be up for this fight,” said Redknapp. “He’ll probably think to himself ‘can Erling keep this up?’
“He only needs two or three games out, Harry’s capable [of catching him]. The golden boot is going to be interesting.”
Townsend then assessed what impact the World Cup will have on the race. Kane will be toiling away in Qatar with England, while Haaland will be biding his time back in Manchester after Norway failed to qualify.
“The problem is when Harry is at the World Cup, Erling will be sitting there on the beach resting with his feet up,” Said Townsend.
No chance Haaland puts his feet up – Redknapp
Redknapp then suggested taking a break will be the last thing on Haaland’s mind when quipping: “I reckon he just does finishing! He goes home and does shooting practice, he’s that sort of guy isn’t he.”
If Haaland isn’t the sort to rest on his laurels, he’ll certainly have plenty of time to fine-tune his game while Kane is in Qatar.
The final Premier League match before the World Cup begins is on Sunday, November 13.
The next isn’t until Boxing Day, meaning Haaland will have six weeks to prepare his assault on Premier League defences in the second half of the season.
