Blackmagic Design has announced a full-frame cube-style cinema camera at NAB 2024. The Pyxis 6K camera comes in EF, PL, or L-mount and shares many features with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K the company released last year.
Blackmagic describes its new Pyxis 6K as “the world’s most riggable full frame digital film camera,” citing its “extremely versatile design.” A quick look at the camera shows how serious Blackmagic is about making something versatile. There are screw threads galore, enabling creators to easily add rigging, handles, EVFs, and other accessories to fit a diverse range of workflows.
Despite this adaptability, the camera itself is not all that large. It is built using machined aluminum, ensuring a relatively lightweight design — it weighs 3.3 pounds (1.5 kilograms).
Much of the front of the camera is comprised of a lens mount, while the camera’s left side features a large display and many physical controls. The top, bottom, and right side include expansion slots and ports. The camera sports a pair of CFexpress Type B card slots, a USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 expansion slot for external media, an integrated stereo microphone, a mono speaker, headphone and mic ports, a battery port, 12V DC input, Ethernet, 12G SDI Out, REF In, and more.
As for the image sensor, the Pyxis 6K features the same 6K resolution full-frame image sensor as the Cinema Camera 6K. The sensor promises 13 stops of dynamic range and has dual native ISO at ISO 400 and 3,200.
The camera shoots open gate 3:2 footage at 6,048 x 4,032 resolution up to 36 frames per second. Faster frame rates are available in 6K DCI 17:9 (48 fps), 6K 2.4:1 (60 fps), and Full HD (120 fps).
As for an electronic viewfinder, the camera doesn’t have one built-in. However, it works with the new EVF that Blackmagic announced alongside the Ursa Cine 12K camera. This EVF has numerous controls and offers a Full HD OLED display. The camera’s built-in side display is four inches, by the way, and displays HDR content with a max brightness of 1,500 nits.
The Blackmagic Pyxis 6K camera is available to order now, and costs $2,995 for the L-Mount and EF versions. The PL mount version is slightly more expensive at $3,195.
