Tom Cruise is a living legend: there is no one who has not seen, appreciated or was not appalled by his ability to make a motorcycle fly through space for seven and a half minutes without resorting to editing to create an action scene. Perhaps the question most often associated with the Top Gun: Maverick actor has been, “But how does he do it?”
The answer is not knowable by us mere mortals that of Cruise we can only limit ourselves to look at the films and behind the scenes, often even more incredible than the action sequences present in the film. In a more than brilliant career, what are the best stunts of this incredible performer? Here are the 10 most impressive!
10. Edge of Tomorrow (2014) contains one of Tom Cruise’s best stunts
In the 2014 fictional action movie Edge of Tomorrow, which has become a cult also thanks to the interpretation of Cruise co-star Emily Blunt, the actor had to wear very heavy armor. It is estimated that Tom Cruise shot the action scenes with approx 130 kg of equipment I’m wearing. Given the final result, one can only appreciate the great resistance and dedication of the star!
9. The Mummy (2017)
In the unfortunate remake de The Mummy of 2017, Tom Cruise has defied (literally) gravity with rather poor results for the latter! Cruise beats gravity 1-0: to shoot the sequence of the plane in a dive, the star tried to shoot the scene without a green screen, but in a NASA plane dedicated to astronaut training. The aircraft then made a 22-second free fall. Cruise made the flight four times to get the scene done.
8. Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)
In the fifth chapter of the successful saga of Ethan Hunt, dating back to 2018, Tom Cruise was not afraid to try his hand at this very difficult and dangerous undertaking: shooting an action sequence in the air, at driving a real helicopter. But that’s not all: for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Tom also made a360 degree immersion with corkscrew.
In preparation for filming, the star spent 16 hours a day training to rack up the 2,000 hours it takes to fly a helicopter himself.
7. Top Gun: Maverick (2022) contains one of Tom Cruise’s best stunts
The highest paying film of his career, Top Gun: Maverick, saw Tom Cruise reach one of the highest peaks of his ability as a driver as well. Not only do the scenes filmed on a motorcycle at full speed see the actor driving, but he was also behind the “wheel” of the F/A-18 jet during the famous dog fight. The fighter was certainly not in flight, but it was in motion with the star on board and the movements simulated a real duel in the air.

6. Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) contains one of Tom Cruise’s best stunts
A very young and in good shape Tom Cruise shouldn’t surprise fans when he engages in a feat like the one he accomplished during the filming of Mission: Impossible 2dating back to 2000. In a truly incredible take, Tom decided to really climb the mountains of Utah. Only a mere safety rope was tied to her belly, leaving the rest of her body completely free from any type of harness or handhold.
For those who remember the sequence well, there is also an incredible leap between one rock chain and another. It must not have been easy for Tom, despite his perfect physical shape and youth!
5. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)
In the chapter of the saga Mission: Impossible of 2015, titled Rogue NationTom decisively pushes his physical limits in a way that only Kate Winslet seven years later in Avatar: The Way of Water he would. Cruise has established a real freediving records while filming a motion picture: he held his breath for approx six minutes, meanwhile diving a whopping 120 feet deep. Not bad!

Tom Cruise doesn’t just drive complex vehicles that take years of training and practice, or climb the tallest (and most slippery-walled) buildings in the world. When you think that the star has nothing left to prove to anyone, he always wants to surprise his audience with special effects!

In Mission: Impossible – Falloutwhile he was still recovering from his fall while jumping from one skyscraper to another, therefore with a ankle still broken, Tom Cruise has seen fit to give shape to the most daring stunt of his career. Together with the character played by Henry Cavill, Tom’s Ethan Hunt decides to make a HALO jump. What’s it about? It is a high-altitude and low-altitude parachute jump, in which you open your low-altitude parachute after free-falling for a period of time. The stunt was done 106 times by Cruise. Not bad, for the still lame star!
