New Dallas Stars multipurpose sports facility breaks ground in Farmers Branch

A new multipurpose athletic complex for young people is coming to Farmers Branch as part of a $25-million investment from the Dallas Stars to develop and grow youth sports across the metroplex.
City officials and Stars representatives broke ground Wednesday morning at the future StarCenter Multi-Sport Farmers Branch, located at 2400 Pike St. The project has been in the works for the past five years, said Farmers Branch Mayor Terry Lynne.

“It’s very exciting because sports in general are a real catalyst for our local economy,” Lynne said. “The impact that the new multisport facility is going to have [will] be huge.”

Lynne said this center represents one of the city’s largest sports developments. Farmers Branch has seen an uptick in residential and commercial developments the past few years, namely in the expansion of retail around Mustang Station.

The new facility will serve more than 50,000 young athletes, according to a news release from the Stars. With up to eight basketball courts and 16 volleyball courts, the space plans to host youth sports clubs for children ages 6 to 19, Lynne said.

He also noted that joining a sports team provides an extracurricular opportunity for students and offers them a competitive advantage when applying to college.
Building this multisports complex is also part of the Stars’ strategy to build outside of their robust ice skating business and further expand into youth sports, said Brad Alberts, their president and CEO.
The center marks the Stars’ second multisport facility in Dallas-Fort Worth after purchasing last October The MAC Sports in Lewisville, which is home to the largest girls’ volleyball club in D-FW. Texas Advantage Volleyball plans to move its homebase to Farmers Branch once the new center opens.

“We see this as an opportunity to continue to invest in growing our youth sports business,” Alberts said. “There’s so many of these private clubs in volleyball, basketball that need gym space, and we feel like we’re uniquely positioned to be able to deliver that.”

The one-story, almost 3-acre building will be located next to the ice skating rink, Children’s Health StarCenter, formerly known as the Dr. Pepper Stars Center.
“We’ve had a Dallas Stars hockey center in our city for almost 24 years, and so now we’re extending that into a broader reach for both basketball, volleyball, and possibly even indoor pickleball,” Lynne said.
In early November, Farmers Branch hosted the Pickleball National Championships fueling the craze for a sport that has gained national popularity this year. Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch is also hosting the national juniors golf tournament this week.

“Farmers Branch, in my mind, we are on the map as becoming a sports center with all of our youth soccer programs and youth hockey,” Lynne said, adding he hopes the city becomes the “epicenter” for pickleball.
Additionally, youth sports in North Texas have been “booming” with club sport participation in volleyball increasing over the past few years, Alberts noted. In other words, this project comes at a time when many parents are encouraging their children to join a sports team.
“This is definitely something that strategically we’re trying to move forward with in the future where we build the hockey, basketball and volleyball facilities together,” Alberts said. “I think this is the first [sports facility] of hopefully more to come of this concept of blending the three sports together.”
The center is slated to open in December 2024.
