World Series T-shirts on sale tonight in either Dallas or Houston – but not both

Texas Rangers and Houston Astros American League Champion gear is waiting securely in sealed boxes at Academy Sports + Outdoors and Dick’s Sporting Goods stores as the two Texas markets await a winner in tonight’s winner-take-all Game 7 in Houston.
But only one market will have the late-night opportunity Monday to nab League Champion T-shirts, hats and other memorabilia.

Academy Sports + Outdoors stores in Dallas-Fort Worth or Houston will close Monday night at the regular 9 p.m. Dick’s Sporting Goods will close at its normal 10 p.m. Stores in just one of those markets will reopen around 10:30 p.m. or 11 p.m., or whenever the game at Minute Maid Park ends, to satisfy fans looking for hot-off-the-press American League Champion T-shirts.

At Academy Sports, boxes of Texas Rangers and Houston Astros commemorative t-shirts and hoodies have been delivered to more than 50 stores in Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston.

The sealed boxes say “DO NOT OPEN.” The wishful warning continues: “Hold for Rangers ALCS clinch” or in Houston, “Hold for Astros ALCS clinch.”
Half of those boxes will go back to the manufacturer, Fanatics, without ever being opened at the conclusion of Monday’s Game 7 of the American League Championship Series between the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros.

Tables will be set up inside Academy Sports stores in both cities, 23 in D-FW and 31 in Houston. A dozen Dick’s Sporting Goods stores in D-FW have the timely digs for post-game shopping and will open two hours early on Tuesday at 7 a.m. to accommodate fans, a spokesman said.
Academy has done this before. Remember when the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA championship in 2011?

“When the Astros won (the World Series) in 2022, people lined up around the building and honked their horns in the parking lot,” said Academy spokeswoman Grace Carter. About 15 to 20 people will be let in at a time.

Spending on team merchandise has amped up as the series progressed, she said. “Momentum has been building in both cities.”
Academy Sports stores will remain open until shoppers leave or the individual store runs out of merchandise. In those sealed boxes are Fanatics ALCS Champs Locker Room shirts, Nike World Series participants dugout tees and hoodies and ALCS Champs tchotchkes such as decals, koozies, lanyards and pennants. Academy didn’t share prices on the get them while they’re hot (ecstatic) merch.
Carter said she doesn’t know what happens to the losing team’s t-shirts. Fanatics hasn’t reponded to a request for answers.
