How Bally Sports issues will affect Rangers, Stars, Mavs fans’ ability to watch games

Diamond Sports, the parent company of Bally Sports Southwest, voluntarily filed for bankruptcy Tuesday in a move that had been anticipated for months.
Bally is the local broadcaster for most Rangers, Mavericks and Stars games. The exceptions are a small number of games televised by national outlets.
Here is what to know about the effect of Diamond’s bankruptcy on local viewers:
Changes for viewers with Diamond’s bankruptcy?
For now, nothing. The company said in a press release it expects to continue to operate during the bankruptcy process and coverage of games should not be affected.
“DSG will continue broadcasting games and connecting fans across the country with the sports and teams they love,” Diamond Sports CEO David Preschlack said in the statement. “We look forward to working constructively with our team and league partners and all DSG stakeholders throughout this process and beyond.”
What cable, satellite providers carry Bally Sports SW?
In general, the two cable providers that carry BSSW are DirectTV and Spectrum. Access through AT&T U-verse is not available to new customers, but current U-verse customers with U-verse controls can continue to access BSSW. There may be some smaller providers. The best way to find your individual potential viewing options is to go to getmyhometeams.com (it’s a Bally-supported site). The site allows you to enter your zip code and find out what providers and streaming services are available.
What are the streaming options?
FuboTV recently joined DirecTV Stream as the lone independent streaming option that carrys Bally Sports Southwest. Bally Sports channels remain unavailable on Hulu Live, YouTube TV, Dish and Sling TV.
Sinclair also debuted the single-channel Bally Sports+ subscription last year to allow viewers access to their local RSN for $19.99 a month, or $189.99 annually before taxes.
But it’s not going to help you watch the Rangers if you aren’t on a Bally-supported service. Bally does not have exclusive digital streaming rights for most of the MLB teams on their networks, including the Rangers.
Where can I watch Mavs, Stars playoff games?
The NBA and NHL playoffs begin in mid-April. First-round games for both the Mavs and Stars would be shown on Bally Sports Southwest in addition to a national outlet. ESPN (ABC, ESPN, ESPN2) and Turner (TNT, TBS) share the playoff rights for both the NBA and NHL. After the first round, the national outlets have exclusive rights to the remainder of the playoffs, and Bally’s broadcasts are done for the season.
What if Diamond’s restructuring attempts fail in the middle of baseball season?
Major League Baseball has set up a local media department in case it has to take over broadcasts for teams. Games would air locally via MLB Network or streamed on MLB.TV in case that happened.
“Diamond Sports Group’s bankruptcy declaration today is an unfortunate development that we have been expecting. Despite Diamond’s economic situation, there is every expectation that they will continue televising all games they are committed to during the bankruptcy process,” MLB said in a statement. “Over the long term, we will reimagine our distribution model to address the changing media climate and ultimately reach an even larger number of fans.”
Staff writers Evan Grant and Callie Caplan, and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
