Ferris athletics set for annual ‘red out event’

BIG RAPIDS – Ferris State University Athletics, in conjunction with the sports communication program on the FSU campus, will hold its annual “Red Out” event this Saturday at the Ewigleben Sports Complex.
The Bulldogs will host Saginaw Valley State in men’s and women’s basketball action in addition to playing host to Bemidji State on the ice that evening. Fans are encouraged to wear red for all events and the FSU teams will also be wearing red uniforms during the day’s events.
The women’s basketball game gets underway at 1 p.m. inside Jim Wink Arena with the men’s game to follow at 3 p.m. Bulldog Hockey wraps up the weekend homestand versus Bemidji State at 6:07 p.m.
The “Red Out” event is an annual event hosted by students in the sports communication program and the sports careers registered student organization (RSO) to benefit women’s heart health during healthy heart month. A silent auction will take place throughout the day with proceeds to benefit Corewell Health Big Rapids Hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation unit. Auctions will begin one hour prior to each game.
The silent auction items will include four Grand Rapids Griffins tickets and a signed t-shirt, six individually signed hockey pucks, two signed hockey sticks, a signed Ferris State Basketball jersey, a signed Bulldog Football photo, giftcards and much more.
“It’s one thing for the university to push this,” Ferris president Dr. Bill Pink said. “I love it when students step up and say, ‘this is ours, we’re going to do this. Every time I hear this, I think how can our university partner with our students? I love the idea our students are engaged in this.”
Saturday’s home basketball games represent the final regular-season games for the Bulldogs. In addition, this weekend’s home hockey series will have huge implications for the Bulldogs as they try to finish among the top four teams in the CCHA and earn the right for home ice in the opening round of postseason competition.
Tickets for all Bulldog events can be purchased in advance online at FerrisStateBulldogs.com/Tickets.
