CBS Sports Network’s continued coverage of the 2023 college football season features three games for the Week 5 slate, all of which are set to kickoff during a jam-packed Saturday. Buffalo and UConn get things started at noon in an interesting non-conference game.
The game is intriguing because both teams are coming off of huge victories. UConn trounced Florida Atlantic 48-14 to earn its first win against an FBS opponent this year, and its largest margin of victory in such a situation since it beat Memphis 45-10 on Dec. 7, 2013. Not to be outdone, Buffalo crushed No. 23 Northern Illinois’ College Football Playoff hopes with a 23-20 win.
In another nonconference clash, San Diego State is trying to right the ship as it travels to Central Michigan. The Aztecs are on an 0-2 skid since winning their season opener against Texas A&M-Commerce but had a bye week to get right in Week 4.
In an 8 p.m. nightcap, Wyoming and Air Force get Mountain West Conference play started in Laramie.

UConn is favored against an FBS team, so it must be a special season for the Huskies. They certainly looked the part in their big win against Florida Atlantic, rushing for a whopping 421 yards to the tune of 6.4 yards per carry. But Buffalo is no slouch. The Bulls’ only loss this year came against a top-10 Missouri team, and even then they kept it respectable — at least defensively — by allowing just 38 points against one of the most explosive offenses in football. And then, of course, Buffalo has a top-25 win on its resume following Week 4’s overtime win on the road against Northern Illinois.

San Diego State’s bye week provided the perfect opportunity to recover from a difficult two-week stretch. The Aztecs fell in games against California and Oregon State by a combined score of 52-10. While SDSU’s defense has been solid this year, it will have its hands full against Central Michigan. The Chippewas currently rank second in the MAC in total offense (424 yards per game) and scoring offense (32 points per game).
Air Force at Wyoming

This matchup has certainly lost a lot of its luster. Both Air Force and Wyoming were seen as preseason dark horses in a loaded Mountain West Conference, but a combined 1-6 record among the two programs has the arrow trending in another direction. Neither offense has lit the world on fire thus far. Wyoming hasn’t scored more than 17 points in a single game, while Air Force has scored just 10 points in two games against FBS competition. If nothing else, this could be a get-right game — for either team, really.
