SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A long-awaited mother-daughter dream cruise turned into a nightmare for a Southampton woman and her daughter this week.
CBS Miami reported that a Virgin Voyages ship headed back to Miami after a passenger fell from her balcony to a deck below and died Sunday, just hours after it had left port. Virgin Voyages made a statement to CBS Miami: “This passenger went over their balcony to a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away.” The investigation is ongoing, the report said. Virgin Voyages did not immediately return a request for comment.
Allison Rappa-Feliciano, who owns The Beauty Bar in Southampton and at Saks Fifth Avenue— she also previously had a shop in Southold — wrote on social media about being a passenger on the ship as the tragedy unfolded. “Get me off this cruise,” Rappa-Feliciano wrote. “This is a nightmare.”
The woman fell from the 15th floor down to the 7th floor, she said. “They turned the ship around and we’re on the way back to Miami,” she wrote. “How traumatic for the guests who witnessed this, and how unbelievably sad for her family.”
On Monday, Rappa-Feliciano told Patch, “I’m still on the ship. It’s insane.” The plan was to originally sail from Miami to Roatán in the Caribbean, then to Costa Maya, Mexico, Bimini in the Bahamas, and back to Miami.
“Now we’ve been rerouted,” she said. “We went back to Miami, where the ship was docked from 1:30 a.m to 10 a.m., when we sailed back out with a completely different itinerary.”
She and her daughter were at the pizza restaurant when the woman fell, Rappa-Felliciano said. She added, and TMZ reported, that the woman fell onto another passenger who was also eating at the restaurant and not believed to be hurt, Rappa-Feliciano said. Rappa-Feliciano, who divides her time between Southampton and Miami, said the trip was booked three months ago, meant to be her first-ever mother-daughter trip with her daughter Daej, to celebrate her 25th birthday. Now, the mood has turned grim, she said. “It’s scary,” she said. “The mood on the ship is very morbid and dreary. No one is smiling.”
