It Isn’t ‘Equity’ to Fail Gifted Students

Eliminating honors and other options for gifted students isn’t equity. It is a punitive and harmful step that further damages the quality and appeal of public schools (“Schools Cut Honors Classes to Boost Equity, Face Backlash,” Page One, Feb. 18).
I advocate wider access to honors and Advanced Placement classes for all students. There is compelling research suggesting that simply taking a single AP course increases a student’s retention in high school and entrance to higher education. For every AP or honors class that a student completes, there is a boost in confidence, content and capability. Simply “enriching” ordinary college-prep curricula doesn’t cut it. It is the cheap and lazy way out.
