COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – As residents across the Midlands wake up to a winter wonderland, it’s important to know that road travel has become more dangerous.
Tuesday afternoon and evening brought freezing temperatures and snowfall to many areas across the Midlands, leaving the entire region under a Winter Weather Advisory until shortly before lunchtime.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) advises drivers to avoid travel if at all possible due to icy roads, but encourages those who must drive to move slowly and safely. It’s encouraged to budget your time in advance and make sure you take more time to travel than you would normally need.
Troopers said it can be difficult to control or stop your car on icy roads, but driving slow can help. Make sure to leave lots of following distance between your vehicle and those around you, and avoid sharp and drastic turns.
SCHP also notes that bridges freeze faster than roads, so be extra careful if travelling across a bridge on Wednesday. Again, it is advised to stay home and stay warm, if possible.
Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing by Wednesday afternoon, topping out at around 35 degrees.
