Tony Romo talks broadcasting struggles: ‘You’re going to fail all the time’

When former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo first stepped in the broadcast booth for CBS Sports, he quickly became known for his ability to predict plays before they happened on the field.
Recently, however, the broadcast booth hasn’t treated Romo too kindly. Romo has acknowledged his recent struggles, as well as his desire to improve.
“I think you’re always evolving,” Romo told the New York Post. “I mean, some changes are good, some you’re like, ‘Ah, I shouldn’t do that. But I always trial and error a bunch and sometimes it works.
“I mean, the ability to adapt and learn, if you never try to change at all — I just think like the best players in the world aren’t afraid of failure. You’re going to fail all the time, but at the same time, you succeed because of that, as long as you think about it and try to understand how to improve and then go about the process to make that happen, which is work ethic and commitment. But you got to have a plan for it before.”
New York Post reported that CBS Sports executives tried to stage an intervention to address his struggles during the last NFL offseason. Jim Nantz, executives including CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus and CBS’ lead NFL game producer, Jim Rikhoff, visited Romo’s home in Dallas, according to the report.
“To call this an intervention is a complete mischaracterization, we meet regularly with our on-air talent,” CBS Sports spokeswoman Jen Sabatelle told the New York Post.
Romo agreed to his mega-extension with CBS in 2020. His $180 million deal will keep him at the network through 2030.
