Ted Lasso season 3, episode 4 had not one but two touching tributes to the late Grant Wahl. Ted Lasso is known for making all kinds of references to real-life sports figures, especially those involved with football. Because of this, it only made sense for the third season of Ted Lasso to honor Grant Wahl, something that it excelled at by featuring two references to the legendary journalist.
Ted Lasso follows the titular American football coach as he travels to the U.K. in order to take up a new job as the head coach of AFC Richmond, a failing football club. However, Ted Lasso manages to turn the team around, inspiring the various players to believe in themselves and their teammates. The wholesome Apple TV+ comedy has entered its final season, with Ted Lasso season 3 wrapping up the critically-acclaimed show. Despite the amount of storylines season 3 still has to cover, Ted Lasso season 3, episode 4 managed to sneak in two tributes to a real-life figure named Grant Wahl.

Ted Lasso’s Coach Beard Was Reading Grant Wahl’s Book
Ted Lasso’s first reference to Grant Wahl comes from Coach Beard, who is often considered the academic out of AFC Richmond’s coaching staff. In one scene, Coach Beard can be seen carrying the book The Beckham Experiment, Grant Wahl’s famous non-fiction work. The Beckham Experiment follows footballer David Beckham as he makes the move to Major League Soccer, making it a great detail for the world of Ted Lasso. However, it also means a lot more than that.
Grant Wahl was a famous sports journalist for a variety of outlets including Sports Illustrated and Fox Sports. The famous journalist was one of the most famous writers in the field of soccer, with him quickly obtaining notoriety. However, during the middle of covering a match at the 2023 World Cup, Grant Wahl died unexpectedly of an undetected aortic aneurysm (per CBS). Wahl’s death was a major loss for the sports journalism field, with Ted Lasso’s inclusion of his book being a great way to honor him.
Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 4 Honored Grant Wahl In The Credits
While featuring Grant Wahl’s book is a sweet enough tribute, Ted Lasso actually goes a step further. Ted Lasso season 3, episode 4 is actually dedicated to Grant Wahl, with his name appearing in the credits. A heartfelt tribute like this is a great way to pay tribute to the sports journalism legend, with Ted Lasso season 3’s two tributes to Grant Wahl being highlights of the episode for sports fans.
