Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood doesn’t expect Leeds United caretaker manager Michael Skubala to remain in charge for their crucial clash against Southampton on Saturday.
It was confirmed this week that Skubala would take charge of their last match against Everton, which the Whites lost 1-0 in a blow to their survival hopes.
Now, they must make a new appointment as a matter of urgency, as there is a clear need for an experienced head to come in and help guide them away from the bottom three.
So far, Skubala has overseen Leeds’ last three league games, firstly drawing, then losing to Manchester United, before being defeated by fellow strugglers Everton.
Now, the Yorkshire club sit in 19th place in the Premier League table after picking up just 19 points from a possible 69 so far this season.
Their poor form resulted in the sacking of Jesse Marsch earlier this month, who as yet, Leeds have failed to replace.
A new manager could potentially give their players enough of a bounce to pick up some much-needed results.
With that in mind, it is imperative that they bring in a new manager before their game against Southampton, who are currently bottom of the table, despite beating Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday.
Sherwood says it’s been a ‘tough job’ for Skubala
This was echoed by former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood, who was asked by Jeff Stelling if he could see a difference in Leeds under Skubala.
Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, he said: “No, not at all. I think that’s the last we see of Michael Skubala, to be honest.
“I think they’ll react, you know what owners and chairman are like, they panic.
“I think they’ll make a decision, I think they need a manager in there as soon as possible to give them a chance, especially in light of the results we’ve seen today.”
The results couldn’t have gone worse for Leeds on Saturday, as all three teams that were in the relegation zone picked up wins, which sent the Whites second-bottom.
“They’ve got dragged right back into it. I think [Skubala] will go back and coach the [under] 21s. It’s been a tough job for him, he’s had two very difficult games but they performed better against Manchester United than they did today.”
“It was almost a must-win game for them, it was a winnable game, it was there for the taking but you have to give credit to Everton.”
According to various reports, Nuno Espirito Santo, Steven Gerrard and Andoni Iraola are all potential candidates for Leeds, while Harry Redknapp has amusingly put his hat in the ring, so it will be interesting to see who they bring in.
With that in mind, the club’s chairman Andrea Radrizzani has a big decision on his hands. But he will have to get the appointment right if the Whites want any chance of remaining in the Premier League.
