Prevent concussion in the first place
I am happy that the NFL gives attention to protecting players who may have suffered concussions. Why not try to prevent concussions from happening in the first place?
Yes, flagrant helmet-to-helmet targeting may get the player ejected. Slamming a player to the ground should be given the same penalty, as should any unnecessary action with potential for injury.
These are players’ penalties. The team also must be held accountable for its personnel. Just like a red card in soccer, the player should be ejected and cannot be substituted — that is, if we really are serious about protecting the players. Address the problem rather than the symptoms.

Considerations in women’s sports
Like so many current issues, the question regarding regulation of women’s sports is a complex one. Conservatives have a point that the regulation of women’s sports regarding sex and gender is needed. Chromosomal variations can result in an anatomic female with characteristics that favor masculine muscle development.
Liberals also have a point that those with different sex or gender characteristics should have an opportunity to participate in sports. The problem comes in carefully defining what is considered male and female with regard to sports. Is it anatomy or is it the configuration of the genes? Both of these choices can have complex outcomes, and the issue deserves careful consideration that should be based on science and not uninformed emotion.
It’s time to recognize the recent science on the subject of variations in human sex and gender.

Hurray for El Paso Electric
As we are still talking about the 2021 power grid disaster, I am reminded how El Paso Electric did an outstanding job keeping power to customers even though the freeze hit it just as severely as it did the rest of the state. It operates independently from the state grid.
El Paso Electric obviously had a smart and responsible management team that learned the lesson from the 2011 freeze. They instituted programs to keep its various types of power generation functioning even in severe cold weather. It kept standby resources available to repair any damage to its system that might occur.
We need to remember that talk is cheap. I cheer for those who demonstrate competence.

Don’t mess with our Colorado River
Re: “Company wants dumping rights,” Thursday Metro & Business story.
Since 1985, the Texas Department of Transportation has promoted the “Don’t Mess With Texas” slogan on billboards, TV spots and even a popular Willie Nelson commercial in 1989. So Texas newcomer Elon Musk and his companies should not be permitted to dump (even treated) wastewater into our Colorado River. “Just say no” to Elon Musk just this once, please. For the sake of our waterways.

Mechanics caught in the middle
We do need to do something to stop the theft of catalytic converters, but making a normal repair procedure or process illegal will present some problems for the mechanics, too.
I am a mechanic, and I do in some cases cut off an old converter and weld a new one in its place. So the possession of the old unit is now illegal?
Also, the Environmental Protection Agency already has a law in place that removing a converter and not replacing it with a new one is illegal. The offender can be fined $10,000 per offense. It seems like new laws only complicate matters sometimes.

HOV lane lacks benefit
Almost three years ago, I asked the former city manager of Richardson to open up the Central Expressway HOV lane, since it appears to clog up the freeway without producing any benefit. I was promised that the Texas Department of Transportation and Richardson would do something, and yet, nothing of substance has happened.
The years-long-missing rubber-pole HOV barriers cause motorists to risk jumping into the HOV lane at inappropriate slots, causing potential injury and death. In my opinion, the only reason the HOV continues to exist on U.S. 75 is to tax motorists for using the HOV lane without a lawful excuse.
Going back to the white double lines would be the best solution if Dallas continues to receive any HOV money.
Also, California used to allow electric vehicles free passage for a period of several years. Texas needs to increase the legitimate usage if they are not going to simply return those lanes to the general driving population.

Metro moonrise beautiful
A beautiful moonrise shot by Shafkat Anowar ran on the front page of last Wednesday’s Metro & Business section — and the man in the moon is checking out the Baptists!
