Editor’s note: This is the final edition in a series of stories profiling the area’s male and female athletes of the year as selected by their respective high schools.
EVART – It would be easy to say Addy Gray was the heart and soul of Evart’s volleyball, basketball and softball teams for the past few years.
It’s also why she’s the 2022-23 Evart Female Athlete of the Year, as announced by the school.
Gray was an all-around standout for a very competitive volleyball team. She was honorable mention all-conference and was a setter who had 224 assists on the season with 18 kills and 15 blocks.
But Gray especially earned her marks in basketball as co-player of the Year and softball as Player of the Year on the respective Pioneer Dream teams.
“Addy is one of our team captains, and a notably decorated basketball player throughout her basketball career at Evart,” Wildcat coach Carrie Kunkle said coming into the season. “We expect her to have a strong season of team leadership, scoring and assists. This is her final year and she will shine as she finalizes a substantially high school basketball career.”
The Wildcats were ranked high in the state basketball polls most of the year. Gray surpassed two milestones: more than 100 3-pointers in her career and 1,000-career points.
She led the team in scoring with 14.8 points per game. She also averaged 2.8 steals and 3.6 rebounds per game.
In softball, Gray was honorable mention All-State; All-Highland Conference first team; pitcher, 17-3 record, 2.05 ERA, 144 strikeouts, two shutouts; and batted .496, with 14 doubles, one homer, and 32 RBIs.
Evart won another Highland Conference and district title, and was ranked No. 1 in the state most of the season before losing in the regional semifinals to Standish Sterling.
Gray announced at the start of the softball season she had signed a letter to play college basketball and softball at Mid Michigan College in Mount Pleasant.
“She’s a super talented player and a great person,” Mid Michigan basketball coach Lance Maney said. “I’ve known Addy for three years now and have seen her in training and high school and travel basketball. She’s an awesome person and an awesome player. She’s one of the first people I wanted to recruit when I got the job at Mid Michigan.”
