While it hasn’t been a great start to the season for Everton as they’ve lost their first two matches while conceding four goals in each, starting EFL Cup play could be a nice break from the Premier League. Doncaster Rovers are currently three divisions below the Toffees, sitting sixth in League Two so it’ll take quite the performance for them to get a result in this match.

Will Everton have motivation for the match?
The EFL Cup is a tough competition with English sides playing so many games during the course of a season. While everyone wants to win a trophy, it is unrealistic for your top players to feature in every competition, especially for a team like Everton that will be looking to fight off relegation. Sean Dyche has a few options after the poor start to the season, either rest his starters to ensure they’re fresh for Premier League play during the weekend, or push players who haven’t performed to play and gain confidence facing a lower division side.
For players like Jesper Lindstrom and Illiman Ndiaye, this match could also be a chance to show that they belong in the starting XI for Dyche in the Premier League. Taking advantage of play in cups, especially while the first team attack is struggling will leave Dyche with tough decisions to make moving forward. Everton needs a spark to kickstart their Premier Leauge season and this match is a chance that could provide it.
