Back in 2019, Ross Chastain used to compete in both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the Truck Series, and during one of his travels back and forth to catch a practice session and a race over the same weekend, he chose a rather unique commute when compared to other drivers. While most people would prefer to take the commercial flight, Chastain had other ideas.

Back in April of 2019, Chastain’s New York to Ohio journey was nothing short of perilous. Juggling between the Xfinity practice sessions and Truck Series races, the Florida man’s unique thinking and combined with his family support helped him attend both events right on time. Explaining his planned route of travel, the watermelon man stated, “Not normal for a driver but normal for me. I don’t fit in with a lot of these drivers. Yes, this is hectic.”

When talking about why he would not prefer to take the flight, Chastain explained, “I was scared of the commercial flights, you couldn’t find anything under $700, $800, and I’m pretty cheap when it comes to that stuff…”
He was also scared that he might end up missing practice sessions altogether if he was caught in a long layover and other delays. “If you miss practice, you could upset your career,” he said.
So how did Ross Chastain exactly travel?
Chastain, his girlfriend and dogs, took the overnight Greyhound bus from New York to Ohio and in case anything happened to the bus along the way, he was always sure that he would be able to secure himself an Uber ride for the rest of the way.

For the next half, Chastain’s father picked them up in their family SUV, from the bus stop and took Chastain all the way to the Eldora Speedway. Chastain was due to compete in the Truck Series race that fine day and his mother and brother decided to fly up from Florida to watch him race.
After finishing the race in a good top-15 spot, Chastain would load everything up back in the SUV and his family would drive the car all the way back to Watkins Glen in New York. In the meantime, Chastain got himself some shut-eye to somehow rest and recuperate ahead of the next race in the Xfinity Series.

For many other drivers with significant backing, it would be hard to imagine them travelling like this, however, for Chastain, this was nothing special. He mentioned that after taking that bus from New York, he felt confident that he would prefer to do it all over again.
