Summary In Scarlett #3, the eponymous hero continues her infiltration of the Arashikage ninja clan to retrieve a mysterious weapon, facing off against Yakuza thugs in the process – and confronting the newly formed Cobra Organization.
The appearance of Cobra in Japan adds a new layer of complexity to Scarlett’s mission, raising questions about the alliances and motives of the Arashikage.
The Energon Universe’s expansion into an international conflict hints at a possible connection between the Arashikage’s secret weapon and the Energon technology that has quickly proliferated Earth since the start of the shared continuity.
WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Scarlett #3Scarlett’s mission in Japan is heating up, as the latest issue in her Energon Universe series finds the G.I. Joe hero drawn deeper into the Arashikage ninja clan. Now, a further wrinkle is added to her undercover mission, as the Cobra terrorist organization has gone international in Skybound’s new shared universe.
Scarlett #3 sees the title character embarking on a mission for Clan Arashikage. The undercover Joe agent manages to break past the Arashikage enemy’s defenses, aiming to retrieve the ninja clan’s mysterious weapon.
Scarlett successfully breaks into the Sato buildings run by the Mugenonami, fighting her way through scores of Yakuza thugs to disable the security around the Arashikage’s stolen weapon. Fans have to wonder if the appearance of the Cobra copter in Japan will signal another alliance with the Arashikage, or if the terror organization is only there to buy the superweapon from the Clan’s rivals.
It’s surprising to see Cobra having already established itself on the international scene, as the terrorist organization only recently formed at the conclusion of the Cobra Commander miniseries. The Commander wasted no time in pulling together whatever resources he had to form the organization following his excommunication from the hidden society of Cobra-La. After that, Cobra Commander quickly formed an alliance with Destro and MARS Industries, selling Energon to supercharge their new Battle Android Troopers. Fans have to wonder if the appearance of the Cobra copter in Japan will signal another alliance with the Arashikage, or if the terror organization is only there to buy the superweapon from the Clan’s rivals.
Cobra’ history with the ninja clan in the original continuity is quite complex. Cobra Commander manages to manipulate Storm Shadow into joining his organization, promising to reveal the identity of his master’s killer once his obligation to Cobra is complete. Once Storm Shadow learns the killer was none other than Zartan, the ninja ditches the villains and joins up with the G.I. Joe team, showing how honorable his character truly is. Fans haven’t seen much of Storm Shadow yet in the Energon Universe, so it’s currently unknown if the ninja will initially align with Cobra as he did in the classic stories, but anything is possible.
While the superweapon that the Arashikage seek to reclaim from their enemies is currently unknown, the appearance of Cobra suggests that it might be Energon-based.

Cobra Extends Its Reach

While the superweapon that the Arashikage seek to reclaim from their enemies is currently unknown, the appearance of Cobra suggests that it might be Energon-based. That would certainly be in keeping with the inter-connectivity featured in the Energon Universe thus far, so having the weapon be somehow related to the Transformers would be a nice way to tie Scarlett in with the rest of the line. However things play out, Scarlett has been an action-packed ride thus far, and the cliffhanger seen in the most recent issue should have G.I. Joe fans hotly anticipating what happens next in the Energon Universe.
Scarlett #3 is available now from Skybound Entertainment.
