BIG RAPIDS – Jenna Williams is returning to sports, and it will be very soon at the collegiate level.
The Big Rapids senior was among the athletes who last week, on Decision Day 2023, announced her sports collegiate plans. She will head to Calvin College on the NCAA Division III level to play basketball.
William was a three-sport athlete at BRHS for volleyball, basketball and soccer. But an ACL injury in the fall during volleyball ended her senior sports season.
“Jenna has been part of our basketball program since she was in elementary school,” Big Rapids coach Jessica Haist said in a statement. “She came to the varsity as a sophomore and played two years before tearing her ACL in volleyball at the start of this year. Unfortunately for all of us, she missed her entire senior season of basketball after having a good spring AAU season.
“:As a junior, Jenna shot 31 percent from the 3-point line, knocking down 21 3-pointers. She averaged 4.4 points per game and 2.0 rebounds. Jenna is a natural athlete who could be a great addition to Calvin’s program. She can be an impact player on both offense and defense, with her ability to knock down the outside shot being one of her biggest strengths.”
Williams said she was impressed with the coaching staff, facilities and school at Calvin. She made her decision on Calvin during February.
“I chose basketball because I knew it would be the sport that I missed the most,” Williams said. “If I had to choose between two sports it would be been volleyball or basketball.”
Williams is planning on studying computer science or nursing at Calvin.
Not being able to play sports since last fall “has not been easy,” Williams admitted. “It kind of lit a fire under me to keep wanting to be playing and get better when I come back.”
Williams has been working on physical therapy to get better on her own. She expects to return to playing form in June or July.
Her role at Calvin, “I think will be shooting,” Williams said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do differently there and get better.”
