Editor’s note: This the first of a series looking back at the top 10 local sports from 2022. Today: No. 10
BIG RAPIDS—The 2022 season saw Big Rapids girls soccer continue their success with a CSAA tournament title and a district title.
The BR girls brought home a district title, beating Tri County to win the title in Clare. Going 16-6-2 on the year, the Big Rapids Cardinals won their second district championship in a row, capping another successful season.
Stifling defense was key in Big Rapids’ successful 2022 girls soccer season. When the Cardinals won the CSAA Gold conference title, taking the tournament championship over Newaygo, the Cardinals allowed only one goal throughout the tournament. Throughout the season, the girls soccer team would allow only 21 goals in 26 games.
“It’s the Fab Four back there with Grace Currie, Ella Tucci, Elise DeVries and Teresa Vance. They play well together,” head coach Curt Ray said after the win over Newaygo. “They’re very patient, they get the ball on their foot very quickly, and they look for a pass, and they never panic. And they have speed. We’ve got a sophomore that’s a captain back there that’s leading them all.”
Big Rapids would then travel to Clare where they would first take on Reed City, who they beat 4-0 in the district semi-final. They would beat Tri County in the district title, once again relying on their defense to win 1-0.
“It’s a wonderful feeling,” Ray said. “A lot of these girls probably put in nine months of training, if not more during the course of the year. And so the conference win and winning the tournament was huge. And districts is just the next leg of our goals we set early in the season.”
The Cardinal season would come to an end in Big Rapids against Grand Rapids Catholic Central in the regional semi-final. GRCC won 2-0.
