AMERICA’S CUP AND SKYDANCE SPORTS COLLABORATE TO CREATE A SERIES OF DOCUMENTARIES ON THE ICONIC VELICA COMPETITION SparkChronicles

America’s Cup and Skydance Sports have announced an exclusive partnership to produce a series of open-access, behind-the-scenes documentaries on the 37th America’s Cup, the world’s premier sailing event and longest-running international sporting competition. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the Oscar-winning directors for 2018’s documentary Free Solo, will executive produce on their Little Monster Films, alongside Oscar-winning producer Free Solo, Evan Hayes, and his company. produced by Anomaly Content & Entertainment (ACE), with David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold and Jon Weinbach of Skydance.
For the first time ever, all teams participating in the iconic sailing event will allow unprecedented access to their preparations and the running of the regatta, and the documentary series will show the people and drama – in and out of the water – during all competition. The 37th America’s Cup will take place in September and October 2024 in Barcelona, where the reigning champions of the event, Emirates Team New Zealand, which has won four Cups since 1995, will be challenged by teams such as: United States, American Magic ; Great Britain, INEOS Britannia; Italy, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli; and Switzerland, Alinghi Red Bull Racing.
Vasarhelyi and Chin said: “We like to bring epic stories to life in an exciting way. The great feats of human potential allow us to explore the characters’ deep and meaningful journeys. You don’t need to be a climber to love Free Solo. Our approach to the story of the 37th America’s Cup will be no different. This series is not just for the sailing enthusiast; it’s a universal story of perseverance, obsession, rivalry and teamwork ”.
Grant Dalton, CEO of the America’s Cup, said, “Over the past two decades both the America’s Cup and the media environment have evolved and matured significantly. The America’s Cup is one of the few global sporting events that has taken place in every edition without the public knowing much more about what’s really going on and the true reach of the talented and innovative people involved. Having the chance to collaborate with Skydance, Jimmy, Chai and their production team to tell these stories is an extraordinary opportunity for the growth of the event and the sport of sailing ”.
Hayes, who also produced the 2021 award-winning documentary Becoming Cousteau, said: “I grew up sailing and have long been fascinated by the America’s Cup, one of the largest international competitions in history. The America’s Cup is spectacular in every respect. The human drama is intense, the scale is epic, and these boats have never raced faster. As the America’s Cup evolved, so did the untapped potential to tell the stories behind the Cup and to show the racing themselves. When I first discussed this opportunity with Skydance and my friends Chai & Jimmy, I realized they were going to form an epic team to tell the story of the 37th America’s Cup. This is a project that comes true for me and also represents a unique opportunity for streaming platforms “.
Today’s announcement is the latest exciting development for Skydance Sports, which recently announced a content partnership with Zebra Valley, the production company of French football superstar Kylian Mbappe.
Jon Weinbach, President of Skydance Sports, said, “The America’s Cup is one of the world’s great sporting treasures – a truly historic event with incredibly dynamic characters, rivalry, action and global reach. This is an extremely exciting project for Skydance Sports and we are thrilled to be collaborating with Jimmy, Chai, Evan and the teams to create a meaningful and memorable series ”.
Founded in 1851, the America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting competition still running. This is a match race competition, in which the “challenger” teams battle to determine which is the strongest and face the current holder of the “The Defender” trophy in the America’s Cup Match. The series of one-on-one regattas, with the first one at 7 wins, will decide the winner of the 37th America’s Cup. Winning the America’s Cup has been an obsession for many boat owners, sailors, designers and builders, many of whom have dedicated a life’s work. This complex fascination proved essential for fans attracted by speed, innovation, charm, rivalry and competition between teams of friendly nations. The behind-the-scenes “all access” production is a further extension of the America’s Cup growth strategy, aimed at making the event and the sport of sailing accessible to the widest possible audience globally and to tell new and never seen before from inside the team bases.
Launched in 2021, Skydance Sports has quickly become the go-to studio for major leagues, teams, elite athletes and Hollywood talent looking to produce world-class sports entertainment. In addition to the America’s Cup docuseries, the studio has numerous high-level projects in production. This month on Prime Video, Skydance Sports will premiere the first global documentary series about the passionate rivalry between the US and Mexico national soccer teams. The studio is also producing an untitled film about the birth of the Air Jordan brand, starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Viola Davis and directed by Affleck for Prime Video. Additionally, Skydance Sports has entered into strategic partnerships with Meadowlark Media, Gotham Chopra’s Religion of Sports and Kylian Mbappe’s Zebra Valley.
