Coverage of the 2023 college football season continues on CBS Sports Network with five games featured in the Week 3 lineup. The action kicks off Friday evening when Air Force hosts to Utah State. The Falcons’ Week 2 win against Sam Houston capped off a CBS Sports Network triple-header in which service academies finished a perfect 3-0, and Air Force is once again under the spotlight as coach Troy Calhoun’s team looks to stay undefeated.
Coverage then continues with a Saturday quadruple-header, starting at noon and running all the way into the early hours of Sunday. Liberty looks to improve to 3-0 when it hosts winless Buffalo before the afternoon slot sees FIU, seeking its third consecutive win, visit a UConn team looking for its first win of 2023. Coverage then descends upon the state of Nevada for two games in the evening windows, both featuring a power conference program on one end. UNLV hosts Vanderbilt before Kansas pays a visit to Nevada for first meeting between the two programs.

Utah State at Air Force

After suffering a Week 1 loss at Iowa, Utah State bounced back nicely during Week 2 with a 78-28 home win against Idaho State. The Aggies rushed for 380 yards in the win with four different players recording rushing touchdowns. While the offense woke up for Utah State last week, the opposite proved true for Air Force. The Falcons scored 42 points in a Week 1 victory against Robert Morris before the offense sputtered during a 13-3 win against Sam Houston. Air Force completed just one pass all game, but 244 rushing yards proved to be enough on a night when the Bearkats were held to a mere 80 yards of total offense. You don’t always have to win pretty, and the Falcons certainly showed that as they improved to 2-0.
Liberty at Buffalo

It’s been smooth sailing for Liberty through the first two games of the Jamey Chadwell era with wins against Bowling Green and New Mexico State in hand. The latter of those victories saw Flames quarterback Kaidon Salter account for four touchdowns — two passing and two rushing — as Liberty pulled away in the second half for a 33-17 win. Salter should present a challenge for Buffalo, which sits 0-2 after losses at Wisconsin and at home against Fordham. The Bulls watched an early 21-3 lead evaporate against the Rams, who battled back and scored the go-ahead touchdown in the closing minutes of a 40-37 decision.
FIU at UConn

FIU has won two straight since dropping its season opener against Louisiana Tech, including a 46-39 victory at North Texas in Week 2 when the Panthers entered as two-touchdown underdogs. FIU running back Kejon Owens rushed for 101 yards and three touchdowns in the victory at UNT — all of them in the second half — and the teams combined for more than 1,000 yards of total offense. The Panthers now catch a UConn team that is off to an 0-2 start in its second season under Jim Mora, Jr. Early-season losses to NC State and Georgia State have ended any honeymoon that was to be had after a rather unexpected bowl berth in Mora’s first year at the helm.
Vanderbilt at UNLV

Both these teams are looking to rebound from Week 2 losses. Vanderbilt’s third year under coach Clark Lea saw the Commodores begin 2-0 after wins against Hawaii and Alabama A&M, but then came a 36-20 loss at Wake Forest. UNLV, meanwhile, kicked off the Barry Odom era with a Week 1 home win against Bryant before the Rebels were overpowered in a 35-7 road loss to Michigan. For Vanderbilt, Saturday brings an opportunity to be halfway home to bowl eligibility before the grind of SEC play even kicks off. Vanderbilt quarterback AJ Swann showed off his arm with 314 yards passing and three touchdowns against Wake Forest, but he was also picked off twice in the loss.
Kansas at Nevada

Before last season, Kansas had not enjoyed a 3-0 start since 2009. Fresh off a Week 2 home win against Illinois, the Jayhawks have a prime chance to hit that mark for a second consecutive September. Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels was sidelined due to lingering back soreness during the team’s season opener against Missouri State, but he returned to action against Illinois and threw for 277 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Containing Daniels will be both a point of emphasis and potentially a challenge for Nevada. The Wolf Pack has been outscored a combined 99-20 amid an 0-2 start featuring losses at USC and at home against Idaho.
