PITTSBURGH, PA— Pittsburgh has a large Irish population and annually stages one of the nation’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parades. But its Irish-themed bars don’t meet the standards of the Travel Channel.
The channel has released its list of the best Irish bars in the country and not a single Pittsburgh establishment was on it. The top-rated bar was McGillin’s in Philadelphia, which has bee around since 1860. A Patch correspondent has been there and agrees it is worthy of the number one ranking. It’s an incredible place and always packed.
But c’mon, no Pittsburgh Irish bars on the list? That’s ridiculous. The Travel Channel obviously overlooked great places here such as: Mullaney’s Harp & Fiddle, Strip District. A Pittsburgh staple since 1992, this bar features weekly Ceili Club nights that promotes Irish culture through traditional dance and music. The menu features Guiness lamb stew, shepherd’s pie, bangers and mashed potatoes and Guiness-battered fish and chips.
Riley’s Pour House, Carnegie The Pour House has long been a signature pub of classic Irish heritage for many years dating back to its inception in 1979. Dan Sweeney and Dennis Murphy began the traditional style of serving spirits and pints of Ireland’s favorite ales and beers that still exists today after several ownership changes. McFadden’s, North Shore This is the city’s Irish sports bar and boasts a lively happy hour and late-night fun.
Monterey Pub, North Side. This place offers offers a piece of Ireland in America’s Rust Belt. It’s a modernly historic pub located in the Mexican War Streets. Expect all of these places to be packed on the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
