Big Rapids soccer team falls in opener

BIG RAPIDS — In nonconference soccer action to open the season, Big Rapids traveled to Whitehall on Thursday and the host team won 4-1.
Whitehall scored first about halfway through the opening half and led 1-0 at halftime.
Big Rapids equalized with a goal from William Heydens five minutes into the second half.
“Play was back and forth for awhile,” Big Rapids coach Justin Fox said. “We gave away a penalty kick with 25 minutes left. We had a chance five minutes later with a penalty kick but it was saved.
“Tired legs set in for us. We gave up two more goals in the last 20 minutes. Nick Pischel did great in goal. I didn’t keep track of saves, but it had to be close to 15. The boys played hard, played with a bunch of heart, and never quit hustling.”
Big Rapids plays next at the Alma Tournament on Saturday.
FOOTBALL SCRIMMAGES
Big Rapids
The Cardinals were home on Thursday against Ludington and Shepherd.
“We were able to get a good look at both our offense and defense,” Cardinal coach Mike Selzer said. “We will evaluate film and make adjustments.
“We were able to see some new guys in multiple positions and look to make adjustments as needed for the coming week.”
Big Rapids is at Paw Paw on Aug. 25 to open the season.
Evart
Evart was home on Thursday.
“We were able to complete our scrimmage today, although with some hiccups,” coach Pat Craven said. “A scheduling snafu had Tawas thinking the scrimmage was Friday, so they did not attend. For us, that left us only one team to scrimmage, St. Louis.
“Our kids showed improvement and played with speed and tenacity. We were able to get our depth a lot of good looks and iron out some position battles going into next week. Most importantly, we are healthy.”
Evart is at Beaverton on Aug. 25.
Morley Stanwood
Morley Stanwood scrimmaged at Montague vs. Hart, Muskegon Orchard View and Montague.
“Overall it was a good experience for our kids going against tough tradition rich schools from the Muskegon area,” Morley Stanwood coach Art Campione said. “We faced a higher caliber of football than we are used to and it pushed us to be better.
“Playing good teams allowed us to see flaws we wouldn’t have seen in the past and gives us a week to get them corrected before these games count for real.”
Campione said his team definitely benefitted from the scrimmage.
“We found some players on both sides of the ball that impressed us and it was nice to see the boys respond after some good teams hit them in the mouth.”
Morley Stanwood is at Central Montcalm on Aug. 25.
Reed City
The Coyotes scrimmaged at Clare on Thursday against Beal City, Grayling and Clare.
“We did well, still have things to work on to get ready for week one,” Reed City coach Scott Shankel said. “It is always good to compete with someone else after a long week and a half of hitting each other. It is nice to see where you are and where you need to get.
“It helps to be able to watch film to evaluate players and effort.”
Reed City is home on Aug. 25 with Kingsley Also that day, Chippewa Hills is at Olivet.
