How Are The New York City Area’s Airports Looking To Relieve Labor Day Travel Stress?

As a primary East Coast travel hub, it is no secret that the New York City area is home to several major airports. These are always on the busy side, but holiday periods provide particular pinch points in terms of passenger demand. With the Labor Day weekend at the start of September approaching fast, let’s look at how some of the area’s airports have implemented schemes to relieve travel stress.
The RESERVE program
During busier periods, passengers often contend with extended wait times when queueing for security. While there are worse things in life than spending a long time in a queue, doing so is still hardly likely to get your Labor Day travels off to the best start. Luckily, certain airports have the RESERVE scheme.
For passengers departing from Terminal 4 at New York JFK Airport, this allows free expedited security screening. In order to benefit from this virtual queue line, where passengers reserve a specific time for their screening, you can book your spot online up to 72 hours in advance. This gives passengers a better sense of the time they need to pass through security rather than the uncertainty of queueing.

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) also facilitates the RESERVE scheme, and passengers departing from gates 40 to 47 at Terminal B are eligible to pre-book their spot. However, it is worth noting that certain Alaska Airlines and Spirit flights are not eligible, and RESERVE doesn’t cover the lines for TSA PreCheck.

Having passed through security, passengers will hopefully have time to relax (or a bit more if they’ve used the RESERVE program!) before boarding their flight. We are all familiar with the process of doing so, and the fact that getting your passport and boarding pass out of your bags or pockets can be a bit of a faff.
However, Newark Liberty International has begun implementing touchless boarding to expedite these procedures and reduce queues at busy times, following a trial in August 2021. As part of this scheme, passengers traveling on international flights simply have to undergo a quick face scan to confirm their identity.

With passengers no longer having to get out and put away their passports and boarding passes, this makes for a quicker and easier turnaround. According to the Lakewood News Network, touchless boarding currently takes place in Terminal A, intending to expand the scheme into Terminal B as well. In the interest of privacy, the face scans used to get passengers onboard are deleted after 12 hours.
Terminal B-FAST
Away from Newark and JFK, New York City’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is also keen on keeping its passengers moving during the upcoming Labor Day weekend. A key weapon in its arsenal is a fast-track scheme known as Terminal B-FAST, which allows passengers to skip the queues with a dedicated security lane.
Unlike the RESERVE program at Newark and JFK, B-FAST isn’t a free scheme. Instead, passengers can pay either $15 for a pre-booked pass or $20 on the day for instant access to the fast-track lane. Nonetheless, for some travelers, time is money, and they may find that B-FAST is worth it at busy times like Labor Day.
