Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid: What did Jamie Carragher say about Virgil van Dijk?
Jamie Carragher was not a happy man after Liverpool’s thrashing at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Jurgen Klopp’s side actually went 2-0 ahead at Anfield through goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, but then things took the sourest of turns.
A brace from Vinicius Junior, one of them gifted to him by Alisson Becker, levelled the scores at 2-2 before the half-time break.
And then in the second 45 minutes of play, things went horribly, horribly wrong for the hosts.
A hopeless team display from Liverpool allowed Real Madrid to move into a 5-2 lead, a scoreline which will almost certainly see the holders through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

It was Real Madrid at their brilliant best on the Champions League stage – and Liverpool at their very worst.

So it’s no wonder Carragher labelled the performance from his beloved club as “shambolic” while on punditry duty with CBS Sports.
The Liverpool legend didn’t hold back one bit, aiming a lot of deserved criticism at the defence.
“Liverpool have been an absolute shambles all season defensively,” Carragher said. “Liverpool’s midfield doesn’t have the energy anymore, the front three don’t press anymore. The cohesion isn’t there anymore. This Liverpool defence can’t cope.
“Liverpool need defenders as well as midfielders.”
Towards the end of the passionate and informative rant, Carragher even cheekily called out Virgil van Dijk.
And you can’t blame him for doing so after the Anfield horror show, which was Liverpool’s hevaiest defeat in Champions League history…

Carragher said: “Virgil van Dijk said I wouldn’t get in that back four a few months ago. I think I’d take his place at the moment…”
Yeah, fair play, Jamie.

Van Dijk just hasn’t looked the same player this season and the same can be said for much of Liverpool’s defence.
Aside from Alisson Becker between the sticks, none of them have come close to the levels they showed last season.
And the less said about Joe Gomez after his second half display against Real Madrid, the better…
