Summary Director Doug Liman’s American Made ranks as the number nine most popular movie on Netflix for the week of Oct. 2-8.
The movie stars Tom Cruise as American pilot Barry Seal, who became a DEA informant while smuggling drugs for the Medellín Cartel.
American Made earned mostly positive reviews from critics and performed modestly well at the box office, with Cruise’s more charismatic performance proving particularly praiseworthy.
American Made, an action comedy with an underrated Tom Cruise performance, has just landed on Netflix’s top 10 movies list. Released in 2017, American Made is based on real events, chronicling the exploits of American pilot Barry Seal, who eventually found himself serving as an informant for the DEA while smuggling drugs for the Medellín Cartel. The movie serves as a reunion for Cruise, who plays Seal, and director Doug Liman, with the pair previously working together on 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow.
Now, per Netflix’s Top 10 list, American Made was the ninth most popular movie in the U.S during the week of October 2 – 8. The movie beats out Megamind, which is in the number 10 spot, but falls short of Colombiana, Dune, Casper, Fair Play, Identity Thief, Last Vegas, Nowhere, and, in the number one spot, Reptile.
How Was American Made Received?
Cruise is now best known for starring in and producing the Mission: Impossible franchise, most recently starring in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, but he’s starred in some interesting projects between his outings as superspy Ethan Hunt. American Made earned generally positive reviews from critics, with the film currently sitting at a strong 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score of 79% suggests that most audiences who saw the film also enjoyed it.
In terms of box office performance, American Made ended its run with just under $135 million worldwide. With a budget of $50 million, the take is not exceptional by any means, but certainly respectable considering the film’s genre. The movie’s story and subject matter wasn’t really the main selling point here, with Cruise himself serving as the big draw. American Made’s box office performance, then, suggested that Cruise was still a movie star capable of pulling audiences to theaters.
Cruise is also a source of positivity in many of the movie’s reviews. In contrast to his more serious Mission: Impossible role, which is really more oriented now around death-defying stunts and physical feats, American Made feels like an old-school Cruise performance. Seal isn’t portrayed as an action hero in the film, and Cruise’s natural charisma gets to really shine through in a role that is more carefree, comedic, and cheeky.
