The Otherswhich airs this evening at 23.46 on Iris, is the film by Alejandro Amenábar freely adapted from The turn of the screw by Henry James, a novel that also inspired the series The hunting of Bly Manor.
The others, the plot
Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidmanlisten)) is a woman who lives on the island of Jersey, England. Her daily life is devastated by concern for the fate of her husband, who volunteered for World War II and never returned home. As if that weren’t enough, the woman also has to face the rare disease that has struck her children Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), which prevents them from exposure to sunlight and forces them to live in perpetual darkness, with the windows and doors of the great mansion that always remain closed. The routine of this broken family takes a turn when three new servants are hired: Mrs. Mills (Fionnula Flanagan). Mr Tuttle (Eric Sykes) and Lydia (Elaine Cassidy). The arrival of the three strangers also leads to strange events occurring within the house, while Anne begins to have nightmares about a boy named Victor and an evil witch. Grace soon realizes that maybe she and her family aren’t the only “tenants” of the old dark house.
The collaboration between Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise
Like movies like The sixth sense, The Others it is a film that plays a lot on the surprise effect and that manages to scare the viewer above all thanks to the construction of a sense of constant expectation, with the shots that are full of a sense of hidden but tangible danger. The film of Alejandro Amenabar it was a success both with critics and with the public: and to think that at the start of production the film risked being a very different product from the one that later arrived in theatres. As told by the site of theInternet Movie Database, in fact, initially Nicole Kidman was not so convinced to accept the role and, indeed, begged the director and the Weinstein brothers (who produced the film) to look for another actress to play Grace. That’s because Nicole Kidman came from the filming of Mouline Rouge!the musical signed by Baz Luhrmann (director who now arrives in theaters with Elvis): the Australian actress didn’t feel ready to step into a role that explored so many dark sides after playing Satine in the musical.
His fear wasn’t so unfounded since, according to IMDB extensionthe actress was forced to leave the set during filming because playing the lead Grace was something that led her to have real nightmares. In an interview always reported by IMDB extensionNicole Kidman explained: “At one point I didn’t want to do this movie anymore because I knew I couldn’t get there emotionally.” Among the reasons that prompted Nicole Kidman to accept the part was the director’s great admiration for her: Alejandro Amenábar, in fact, had wanted to work with her since the time of the film To deathof 1995. Above all, however, to completely convince Nicole Kidman to accept the role in The Others was the presence of her husband Tom Cruise among the producers. A collaboration that, however, failed to save the marriage between the two Hollywood stars. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidmand met on the set of Thunder days and they had married in 1990, just six months after the film’s release. The union of two much loved stars led the press to always be interested in their relationship, also thanks to their collaborations such as Rebellious hearts And Eyes Wide Shut.
