BIG RAPIDS – He’s only a freshman.
Sports fans enjoy bragging about freshmen who are highly successful on the varsity level. This would include freshman forward Wyatt Skiera who has emerged as one of the leading scorers on the Big Rapids Cardinal hockey team.
He had two goals and an assist in Big Rapids’ dramatic 3-1 win at Cadillac on Wednesday.
Prior to the season, Skiera didn’t know for sure if he would be on the varsity but was very hopeful.
“I’m just trying to pay attention to where I’m at and make sure I’m in the right spot,” he said, of his responsibilities on the ice.
Skiera has had more assists than goals, but has also enjoyed his fare share of goals.
As for assists, “the key is keeping your head up and keep yourself going,” he said.
His goals againt Cadillac were obviously memorable but Skiera had a few others earlier in the season.
Against St. Mary Catholic Central, “I won the faceoff and powered through three guys and (scored unassisted),” Skiera said.
The Cardinals are 7-6 and play home against the Traverse Bay Reps on Monday.
The key for the Cardinals each game, Skiera said, is to be as disciplined as possible, and cut down on penalties.
“I think we can really go somewhere,” he said. “But we have to stay out of the box.”
Skiera also plays lacrosse in the Lansing area and also plays football. He’s considering doing track this spring. His summer season is very busy.
