Rep. Eric Swalwell’s campaign drops thousands more on travel, luxury hotels

As Americans grapple with decades-high inflation and struggle to juggle their bills, the campaign of Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) spent thousands more on luxury accommodations in recent months, including in Nantucket, New York and Las Vegas.
The campaign of Swalwell, who represents a safe Democratic district in the Bay Area suburbs outside Oakland, spent $3,354 and $2,552.94 at Manhattan’s Conrad Midtown and Loews hotels respectively, according to third quarter campaign finance disclosures viewed by Fox News Digital.
Swalwell for Congress also shelled out $1,443.94 at the Jared Coffin House Historic Hotel on the Massachusetts island, and over $3,000 at the five-star Santa Monica Proper Hotel in Southern California.
The campaign spent $1,388.12 at the Vdara Hotel and Spa in Sin City and $1,173.60 at the Conrad hotel in Nashville.
Swalwell for Congress didn’t skimp on travel, either, spending nearly $8,600 on 27 luxury car rides with Sunny’s Executive Sedans, $6,400 on 17 Amtrak trips and $7,500 on Just Dreaming Yacht Charters.

This is not the first time Swalwell and his campaign’s spending and travel have drawn scrutiny, though his office has insisted that all the money has gone for campaign purposes in keeping with Federal Election Commission regulations.

Between April 1 and May 18, the campaign dropped more than $62,000 on travel-related expenses, including swanky hotels across the US and in Paris, pricey airline flights and dozens of car rides with Uber and Lyft.
In the second quarter of last year, Swalwell — who has been linked to politician-seducing Chinese spy Fang Fang — spent $21,200.75 in six transactions at a California Ritz-Carlton where his wife once worked.
Earlier in the year, the 2020 presidential candidate and four other House members took a $84,621.59 trip to Qatar that was comped by the US-Qatar Business Council, which is “dedicated exclusively to enhancing the bilateral business relationship” between the nations.
Swalwell has also spent $78,419 on 156 United Airlines flights since 2020, according to public records.
Despite the apparent extravagance, Swalwell had spent only $3.1 million on the campaign trail since the beginning of last year, far less than scores of other House candidates, according to FEC data.
Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was the biggest-spending candidate, dropping $22.9 million this cycle, the FEC said. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, was a close second at $22.3 million.
Of the 86 candidates who have spent more money than Swalwell since the start of 2021, 51 were Democrats and 33 were Republicans, records show.
