Rachel King, former Freeland SportsZone director, recently filed a complaint with the Michigan State Police, citing sexual assault by a supervisor which she claims ultimately led to her termination.
MSP Lt. Kim Vetter said the complaint, filed on July 6, is an open investigation and was sent to the Saginaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review. King has also filed a 12-page lawsuit alleging sexual advances from her supervisor which she rejected. She said her rejection of those advances led to her firing.
King’s direct supervisor was Tittabawassee Township Manager Marc McGill, who retired on Sept. 30. He is also president of the Freeland Community Sports Association Board of Directors.
King worked at the non-profit SportsZone for more than 13 years and was fired on Oct. 3.
Through her attorney, Julie Gafkay, King has filed a lawsuit against the Freeland Community Sports Association – doing business as Freeland SportsZone – and McGill in the Saginaw County Circuit Court.
King cites a hostile work environment and quid pro quo sexual harassment and retaliation pursuant to the Michigan Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, along with claims of assault and battery, infliction of emotional distress and enforcement of rights under the Whistleblowers’ Protection Act.

The lawsuit King filed cites that on Feb. 16, 2022, McGill told her he wanted to go to lunch and put together an agenda for the Feb. 22 board meeting. Once McGill and King were in his truck, McGill reportedly told her he wanted to stop by his mother’s condo to check on it while she was in Florida before going to lunch. McGill encouraged King to come inside the condo, which she did. While he was showing her around the condo, they were in a basement bedroom. Per the lawsuit, King said McGill pinned her down with his knees and arms and attempted to forcibly kiss her while she resisted, telling him to stop several times. She then went upstairs, and he allegedly pinned her against a kitchen island and grabbed her breasts and made sexual comments.
According to the lawsuit, McGill made other sexual advances prior to Feb. 16, including via emails.
About April 28, King was told she was being demoted and her pay would be cut by $8,000 to $10,000. In addition, McGill told King she would only have a job until the end of the summer or possibly until Sept. 15.
King said it was only after she rejected McGill’s unwanted sexual advances that she was demoted, her pay was cut and her job was threatened.
