CBS Sports Network’s continued coverage of the 2023 college football season features six games for the Week 9 slate, including a pair of weeknight battles ahead of a Saturday quadruple-header. The action kicked off Tuesday night with New Mexico State’s 27-24 win over Louisiana Tech in Conference USA play. The league is back in the spotlight again Wednesday evening when FIU welcomes FBS newcomer Jacksonville State.
After a two-day break from the FBS action comes a busy Saturday. The loaded schedule kicks off in the noon ET window when Army West Point hosts UMass in a clash of independents. That game is followed by a pair of in-state feuds. Ohio hosts Miami (Ohio) in an afternoon MAC battle before No. 19 Air Force — one of just nine remaining undefeated FBS teams — visits Colorado State for a Mountain West showdown in the early evening.
Coverage then concludes with another dose of Mountain West action in the late-night window when Nevada, fresh off snapping the nation’s longest losing streak in Week 8, takes on New Mexico.

FIU rallied for a double-overtime victory at Sam Houston to snap a three-game losing streak in Week 8, but the Panthers face an uphill battle against a Jacksonville State team that is off to an impressive 6-2 start in its first season at the FBS level. FIU’s defense has been a liability all season, ranking second-to-last in Conference USA and outside the top 100 nationally at an average of 440.8 yards surrendered. If the Panthers want to make it two wins in a row, they’ll need to slow down the ground attack from a one-dimensional Gamecocks offense. Jacksonville State ranks second in the conference in rushing (211.3 ypg), but is last in passing (166.5 ypg).
UMass at Army

UMass and Army are both desperate to get back in the win column, riding seven and four-game losing streaks, respectively. The Minutemen last took a 63-0 beating at Penn State in Week 7 before getting a much-needed bye in Week 8. The Black Knights, meanwhile, have not scored points since Week 6 after suffering a 19-0 loss to Troy and a 62-0 loss at LSU over the past two weeks. Army seems poised to finally get back on the scoreboard Saturday as its triple-option attack encounters a UMass defense that has been a mess against the run. The Minutemen are surrendering 224.9 rushing yards on average, which is third-to-last among all FBS defenses this season.
Miami (Ohio) at Ohio

This could be a preview of the MAC Championship Game as the two of the three teams tied atop the conference go head-to-head. The RedHawks and Bobcats are both 6-2 overall with wins in six of their last seven games, and Miami was rolling on a six-game winning streak before suffering a close loss to Toledo in Week 8. The biggest edge on either side may very well be Ohio’s ability to stop the run. The Bobcats are holding opponents to just 81.4 rushing yards on average, good for ninth overall in the FBS. Combined with home field, Ohio can like its chances of moving to 7-2 overall and 4-1 within the conference slate. Miami also got bad news midweek with quarterback Brett Gabbert undergoing season-ending surgery.
No. 19 Air Force at Colorado State

Can anyone stop Air Force? The Falcons are now 7-0 after a Week 8 win at Navy. The Falcons continue to dominate on the ground, owning both the nation’s top rushing offense and second-best rushing defense. The passing game even showed life against the Midshipmen as quarterback Zac Larrier — back way ahead of schedule from a knee injury the week prior — completed the longest touchdown pass (94 yards) in school history. Air Force could feast again Saturday against a Colorado State defense that ranks near the bottom of the FBS, giving up 466.7 total yards on average. The Rams have also struggled mightily to establish the run, averaging just 79.7 rushing yards per outing.
New Mexico at Nevada

Nothing has been pretty this season for Nevada. Not even the team’s 6-0 win against San Diego State in Week 8. The Wolf Pack will gladly accept any momentum from their first victory in more than 12 months, but an offense averaging just 15.7 points per game paired with a defense averaging 468.7 yards allowed — second-to-last in the FBS — is far from a winning formula. New Mexico has suffered from comparable defensive struggles. Opponents are averaging 421.4 yards and 32.6 points against the Lobos, but a New Mexico’s offense, which is averaging 29.9 points per contest, has kept things from sinking to the level the Wolf Pack has dealt with.
