Summary Wizz Air will launch direct flights from Cairo’s Sphinx International Airport to London Luton Airport starting October 30, making it easier for travelers to explore Egypt’s ancient history and vibrant culture.
Tickets for the three-weekly service are now available on Wizz Air’s website and mobile app, with fares ranging between £60 and £105 for the outbound leg and £65 and £110 for the return.
The carrier recently reached a milestone of 65 million passengers from its base at Luton Airport and is the largest carrier at the airport, with plans to upgrade to an all-Airbus A321neo base by 2025.
Cairo’s new Sphinx International Airport (SPX) is set to see a new connection to London Luton Airport (LTN) later this year, courtesy of Wizz Air. Announced Tuesday, the Hungarian low-cost giant will launch direct flights to the Egyptian capital city from October 30.
Walk Fly like an Egyptian
Whether you’re hoping to follow in the footsteps of Egyptologists and explore the country’s ancient monuments or kick back and relax with a coffee at the Khan Al-Khalili Souq, Wizz Air’s latest connection is bringing Bedfordshire a little closer to Cairo. The three-weekly service is set to launch in time for the winter travel season, operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with Wizz Air’s Airbus A320neo family fleet.

In a statement shared by the airline, Managing Director of Wizz Air’s UK subsidiary Marion Geoffroy noted the continued demand and popularity of Wizz Air’s Egypt-bound services from its UK target cities.
“From Sphinx International Airport, travellers have so much ancient history at their fingertips to discover. With slightly cooler temperatures in winter, it’s the perfect time to explore this vibrant destination as part of our new winter schedule.”
Tickets are currently available on Wizz Air’s website and mobile app, with fares averaging between £60 ($76) and £105 ($133) for the outbound leg and £65 ($82) and £110 ($140) for the return.
Alongside Cairo Sphinx, Wizz Air also offers scheduled and seasonal services to Sharm El Sheikh International Airport (SSH) and Hurghada International Airport (HRG) from Luton and London Gatwick Airport (LGW).
Setting records
The new route announcement coincided with Wizz Air reaching a milestone of 65 million passengers from its primary base at Luton Airport earlier this week.
Wizz Air first launched flights from Luton back in 2004, with an inaugural service to Katowice’s Wojciech Korfanty Airport (KTW). The airline notably carried over 15 million passengers between the opening of its base in 2017 and October 2022, hitting the 65 million milestone after 19 years of operations onboard one of the carrier’s services to Istanbul Airport (IST).

As of August 2023, Wizz Air is the largest at Luton Airport, employing around 600 staff members, operating an average of 100 flights per day, and offering a network of 58 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Wizz Air’s departures from Luton comprise 45% of departing seats, nearly eight percentage points above its nearest competitor, easyJet.
Jonathan Rayner, Chief Commercial Officer at London Luton Airport, celebrated Wizz Air and the airport’s achievement, noting the continued partnership between the two over the past 19 years.
“Our priority, as ever, is to continue to deliver a simple and friendly passenger experience as we move towards the next key milestone of our relationship with Wizz – next year’s 20th anniversary.”
Over the next several years, the carrier is expected to strengthen its presence at Luton further, upgrading to an all-Airbus A321neo base by 2025. Wizz Air currently has 12 aircraft at the airport, including 6 A321neos.
